Tax Commission Boosts Scott County Property Values

George W. Kirk, chairman of the board of registers, warns time is running out for Sikeston voters to register. Those already registered in the same precinct need not reregister, while movers must notify the city clerk. State law requires one year in state, 60 days in county, and 30 days in precinct residency to be eligible to vote. Precinct registrars will register new voters at polling stations, with books open until July 23 at city hall. after that, unregistered voters cannot vote in the August 5 primary.

Miller Receives Life Sentence for Morehouse Shooting
Judge Joseph H. Allen sentenced Louis H. Miller to life imprisonment after Miller pleaded guilty to first degree murder and first degree burglary in the New Madrid Circuit Court. Miller killed Robert M. Gunter during a hold up at Morehouse on July 6. Attendant Lee Felker was wounded during the escape. Other verdicts in Allen's court included Perry Partes getting four years for grand larceny and second degree robbery, John H. Smith and Louis A. Johnson two years each for second degree burglary, and Roosevelt Williams and James Williams two years each for grand larceny.

Future Farmers of America Sikeston chapter sent eight boys led by Bert Cohoon to the State FFA Camp near Lake of the Ozarks from July 7 to 12. Billy Lewis and Jerry Aufdenberg placed second and third in Wildlife Conservation against 148 competitors. Billy earned a glass rod and Jerry a tackle box, with Billy also receiving an FFA leadership award. The camp, 6 miles from Bagwell Dam, was formerly a CCC Camp and is run by Missouri Association FFA. fees are $10 weekly per attendee for team meals boats swimming and facilities. Eight camping periods run all summer with a full daily program from 6 AM to 10 PM, and Friday square dances with Pin Oak Girl Scout Camp.
