Former Sikestonian Reported Drowned Near St Louis
Joe Schaefer a 30 year old former Local Truck Systems employee is reported drowned after entering the Mississippi River at Eads Bridge in St Louis to rescue a swimmer during a family outing. His body was not recovered by last night. He had lived in Sikeston years ago and worked in St Louis recently and is survived by his mother wife and two children of St Louis.

Barber Al Swaim Struck by Hit and Run Vehicle
Alphonse Swaim local barber was injured about 10 o clock Tuesday night when a hit and run driver struck him as he crossed Highway 60 near the Frisco railroad tracks. City Attorney Robert A Demster assisted at the scene and he was taken to Sikeston General Hospital with a deep gash in his left leg. His condition was reported favorable and a description of the car was not obtained.

Civic leaders in Sikeston and nearby towns set July 24 and 25 as aluminum days to aid war production. Residents will place aluminum at a bin in Malone Park for house to house collection next weekend. The War Department will buy the metal for defense use, converting it into ingots for planes ships tanks shells and fuses.

New Health Unit Approved in Sikeston City Hall
The Sikeston city council in a special noon meeting voted to offer the second floor of the city hall for a proposed health laboratory. The WPA weaving room will move to the city sexton’s house on South Kingshighway. Dr. E A Belden of the State Board of Health indicated plans for the lab are near. The council also approved paving on Dorothy Street and authorized special tax bills, and cleared J W Mathis’s city accounts as of March 31 after an audit by D L Lacy.

Drunken driver in hit and run severs arm in accident
Alfred Boyd of East Prairie was arrested after a westbound truck sideswiped an eastbound car driven by A B Gilliland of Charleston. Gilliland’s left arm was severed. he was treated at a Cairo hospital. Boyd and companion Thomas Byassee were jailed for driving while intoxicated and leaving the scene. two girls who rode with Byassee were not held. Frank Snyder, traveling with Gilliland, was unhurt. Authorities credited truckers and a night marshal for swift arrest.

Negro Acquitted in Grand Larceny Case Over Cow Theft
James Henry Benson a Scott county Negro was acquitted by a circuit court jury of grand larceny for allegedly stealing a cow from N. C. Ancell ten miles east of Benton on March 22. Benson claimed mistreatment in custody and testified that he slept in Ancell's barn, a flashlight found there being his property. The trial also involved Dave Terry, with his case nol prossed, and multiple civil judgments and divorces were noted in the same proceedings.
