World This Week notes General Omar N. Bradley addressing 416 officers at Fort Leavenworth calling for anticipating a long period of tension. He argues the advantage has shifted to the United States as former allies become defensive amid global strain.
Ray Marshall of Crowder reports a remarkable wheat yield from 22.4 acres. He planted 24 bushels of Vigo wheat on his Marshall farm and harvested 811 bushels, averaging over 36 bushels to the acre. Vigo, a new variety developed by the University of Indiana, is in demand for seed. Marshall plans to sell his crop as seed stock this fall.
A 95 degree high marked Tuesday the week’s peak while Tuesday night and this morning cooled to 72. Precipitation reached 1.01 inches on Tuesday and 0.24 inch this morning, totaling 1.25 inches for the week. Forecast calls for partly cloudy skies with scattered thunder showers and little temperature change.
Mrs J R Harwell confined to her room after being struck by a car on Front street at its Kingshighway intersection. The vehicle driven by Ray Wiseman turning onto Kingshighway knocked her unconscious as she crossed. She suffered severe bruises but no broken bones. her ten year old son Robert was with her and helped move away from the path.
The State Highway Department Division 10 Sikeston with Frisco Railroad installs cross back red blinker signals at the Frisco tracks and Highway 60. Two red lights flash both directions with a bell for approaching trains. Sodium vapor lights to be placed at Highways 60 and 61 to improve nighttime visibility and traffic safety.

Three men died during the July 4 holiday weekend in southeast Missouri. George Muller, 40, was killed when struck by a car on Highway 61 near Port Ageville. Hubert Hayes, 22, drowned in Black River near Poplar Bluff, body recovered by John Webb Jr. Charlie Kirberg, 10, drowned at Clear Water Lake after wading into a shallow hole in the river. The National Safety Council condemned the deaths as a disgrace, reporting 819 violent deaths in the three-day period, including 302 traffic deaths and 214 other drownings or incidents.
Seven persons were injured Friday night on Highway 55 a mile north of Chaffee when a Georger brothers truck overturned after being struck by a Southeast Missouri Bus line coach. Bus driver Otto Seabaugh and several passengers sustained serious injuries, including three Chaffee girls. The Georger brothers had only slight injuries.
Camp Lewallen of the Boy Scouts in Southeast Missouri closed its first week with 135 Scouts in attendance. Fifty-nine advanced a rank and many merit badges were earned, notably in Life Saving and Canoeing. Several troops and scoutmasters listed as attending this week and plans for a second session begin July 10. The council invites area pastors and families to a dedicated day at camp on July 11 with activities and a picnic lunch.
Sikeston council heard C C Buchanan appeal for flood relief at his Buchanan Tourist Court area where heavy rains overflow South Kingshighway. He proposed an eight inch sewer line and ditch improvements to drain water south, with plan referred to City Engineer for study.
The Scott County Chapter of the Red Cross invites the public to its annual meeting on Tuesday night July 12 at 8 in Sikeston public library. The nominating committee will propose officers. Guest speaker Cape Girardeau county official Jack Oliver will discuss disaster activities. Reports will cover Home Service, Water Safety, Disaster, Junior Red Cross and Volunteer Special Service.
Two men received state penitentiary terms while five others drew jail time at the Scott county circuit court in session for the July term with Judge R B Oliver III. Names include Charles Alberson four years for receiving stolen property and Jackie Richards two years for fraud, with multiple others given jail sentences or paroles. The term also covers several divorces and alimony awards, plus the Eldridge murder trial date set for July 27. The report notes Eldridge's murder case and Brooks family visit details.
In Magistrate Court Judge M. E. Montgomery presided. Arnie Lassley of Hayti pleaded guilty to stealing six dollars worth of canned goods and received 90 days in county jail. Roy Hine of Sikeston pleaded guilty to DUI, fined 25 dollars and 90 days in jail. license suspended. Hine caused over 100 dollars in damages on Dorothy Street.
Information received in Sikeston states government loan prices for wheat in Scott, Mississippi and Stoddard counties at 2.05 per bushel for No 1 red winter. New Madrid County 2.03, Cape Girardeau County 2.06. Local store price sets the stored wheat price. national average loan price 1.96 per bushel.
Jefferson City Missouri report states Representative Clarence E. Felker of Scott County presented Speaker Roy Hamlin with a giant four foot long gavel crafted from native White Oak. The instrument bears plates naming all legislators and the legislative officers with Hamlin featured on a dedicated plate.
Sikeston visitors report Baltimore heat with shade temperature near 103 degrees. The group includes Mr and Mrs Howard Stowe and family Royal Dean and Sue, visiting son Robert Stowe in government service. They left Sikeston last Saturday to see him in the Maryland city.
The Charleston Baptist Association will hold its first meeting on the new Assembly Grounds on July 12 with about 1260 expected for the evening services. The day features directed recreation classes and conferences, with 9:00 a.m. registration and group picnic lunches. Evening music will be led by Rev. L F Bain and an inspirational address by Rev. E D Owen. The grounds near Highway 55 southeast of Benton will host swings volleyball courts and other facilities as part of a major district Baptist event.
Citizens show scant enthusiasm for the Sikeston city limits extension election to be held Tuesday. Debate centers on ward lines, utility extensions, census timing, and voter registration eligibility tied to a projected city population of 10 000 or more, with potential incorporation of Miner district residents into Sikeston schools.
Chief Harold Wallace warns drivers and cracks down on reckless behavior. At 7 45 p.m. he arrested Chet Wallace at Scott and Gladys for stop sign violation. Fifteen minutes later Edwin Nelson of Stacston Cab Service was fined for the same offense in Judge F Ho South's court.
