Leading Sikeston Men Pass Away
Funeral services for Clay A. Mitchell Sikeston business man and civic leader were held at his home and buried in Memorial Park. He taught in local groups, served on the city council and led Lions Club and Chamber of Commerce. Survived by wife Lucille three sons and a daughter. Another son Lt Clay A Mitchell Jr. died in a 1950 plane crash. The Rev Robert Talbert, Sikeston pastor, also died this morning. services set for Saturday at the Christian church with burial in Masonic cemetery Farmington. Talbert had long ministerial and civic roles and served in state legislature and Missouri National Guard.

Sikeston Kin Notified of Harris Injury in Crash
Relatives in Sikeston learn Ed Harris of Goldston North Carolina sustained serious injuries in a recent traffic accident. He remains hospitalized for several months. Harris is the son in law of Mr and Mrs Murray Klein of Sikeston, and Mrs Klein is with her daughter at Goldston.

Southeast Area Dominates Seed Exhibit Meeting
The seventh annual Missouri Good Seed Show opened at the Riegger Armory on January 24 with about 170 seed exhibits from across Missouri. Southeast Missouri contributed over half the entries and won many ribbons, led by senior division wins and 4-H honors. Sikeston and Mexico were represented by chamber groups and invited the show to return next year.

E L Corbin, sales manager for the C F Mc Mullin Estate, spoke to the Sikeston Lions Club on The Genetics of Hybrid Corn. He noted corn’s central role in US food and that hybridization began as a research accident by Dr George Schull. Corbin cited Southeast Missouri progress with the 100 Bushel Club showing 100 to 140 bushels per acre in 1951. The McMullin Estate, led by J S Kevil, is Missouri’s largest producer of certified hybrid seed corn, gaining national and international recognition.

Sikeston residents approved two sewer bonds, 1709 598 on Proposition 1 for 600000 and 1686 583 on Proposition 2 for 450000, with strongest support in wards lacking sewers and strongest opposition where sewers exist. Officials and civic groups led the campaign, and Dr. Frank L. Sisson issued a gratitude statement praising turnout and cooperation.
