Spillway Residents Anxious to Return Home After Flood Risk
Ten thousand Spillway residents in Mississippi county moved to higher ground ten days ago as the Ohio and Mississippi rivers rose. With river levels down about two feet, residents hope to return but will await Army Engineers clearance. Red Cross has housed 1598 people in tents at Anniston and Malden. Charles Burkett is replaced by Clara Starr in Mississippi county disaster work. Charleston schools reopen as Red Cross operations end there.

Tornado Hits Pilot Knob Area Teardown of Homes
A tornado struck near Pilot Knob and Morningside Farms in Ironton Missouri about 7:30 p.m. injuring Otto Loessner and other residents. Three homes at Pilot Knob and Morningside Farms were destroyed and several others damaged beyond repair.

Old Sikeston firm moves to new marble works location
After 40 years in Sikeston the Sikes ton Marble Works relocates to a purpose built facility on Highway 61 South. The new building spans 36 by 50 feet with concrete block walls and stucco finish pending. The firm’s first order at the new site is a war memorial for Sikeston National Guards members to be placed on Armory grounds facing Highway 61.

Series of Community Agricultural Meetings in Scott County
A six week series of agricultural meetings will be held in about 12 Scott County communities starting January 30. Extension agents Alvin Schraer, Hunter E. George and Tom B. Stroup will host 90 minute sessions at rural schools and other venues to share practices aimed at boosting efficiency and offset a predicted 15 percent income cut in 1950. Free colored pictures on good management will be shown where desired. Meetings run 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. with attendance open to all farmers across communities.

Morehouse Grocery Destroyed by Fire
A large frame building housing the Butler Grocery Store was almost completely destroyed by fire Monday night starting near the rear at 11 50 pm. Most of the structure burned before containment left only portions of the rear and east walls. Origin undetermined. Butler estimates losses at 3500 not including 2000 in papers. partly insured. Ben Harris owned the property, uninsured. Butler will reopen in the building now known as Rays Cafe soon.

4-H Club Members Make 33 Entries in State Seed Show
In Missouri history a 4-H club class was added to the annual State Seed Show. A. J. Renner of Sikeston pushed for the category to reward quality seeds. About 31 of 35 samples from the area entered the 4-H class, with blue ribbons awarded to Haubold, Yates, Larker, Pearson, Mullin, Kesler, and Kesler noted among others. red ribbon recipients included Frank Stanley.

Exposition Showcases Over 200 Seed Exhibits in Sikeston
Officials of the Missouri Seed Improvement Association praised the turnout at the Missouri Good Seed and Short Course in Sikeston. The event displayed 193 seed samples with Wheat King Ray Bolomey and Charles Gardner winning top wheat honors. Gardner, farming 287 acres, highlighted soil testing and crop rotation as keys to high yields. Soybeans and cotton also featured strong entries, with BW Abern of Florissant winning soybeans and Deerng Farms Inc. of Deering taking first in cotton. Audience chants called it the best Missouri seed show yet, organized by A. J. Renner.

Sikeston Men in Record-Breaking Sale of Cotton
Tom Allen and Jackson Davis of Sikeston run Allen-Davis Farms. They sold 9120 bales of cotton on the Memphis market for 1.2 million dollars at 30 cents per pound. The crop covered about 5000 acres owned and 5000 acres ginner customers. Sale arranged by L V Hunter of F M Crump & Company for buyers Anderson Clayton Company and Springs Cotton Mills. The pair were on vacation in Mobile when the deal occurred. Davis learned of the sale from a Mobile newspaper. Allen was in Mobile and then to St Louis, returning later.
