School District Leases Three More Airport Buildings
The Sikeston board of education leases the three remaining former Missouri Institute of Aeronautics buildings to enlarge the Airport grade school on a permanent basis. Total rehabilitation and equipment costs for six buildings reach 57,613.75 dollars. Superintendent Van Bibber notes total district enrollment at 2,544, up from 2,091 last year, with about 300 due to boundary enlargement.

Dace Brothers Paint and Trim Co will begin soon on a new automobile glass building to replace the one wrecked by last Friday’s fire owner Melvin Dace says the damage includes $5 000 in machinery and the building. The firm remains in the business, having reinstalled machinery in the main building. Fire is thought caused by defective wiring. A plastic balloon released at the Naval Air Station near Salem reached nearly 20 miles last week during a meteorological demonstration.

Baby Huffman Flies to Hospital for Treatment
A two month old, Thomas Michael Huffman, flew from Cape Girardeau to Battle Creek Michigan for medical care at Jones General Hospital. Accompanied by his mother and Army nurse Capt. Mary Murphy, the journey followed prior treatment at Southeast Missouri Hospital. The move was arranged with Red Cross aid and involved travel from Kelley Field, Texas. Sergeant Huffman, father, serves at Scott Air Base Illinois.

Fires Compete With Traffic Fatalities From Weekend Blazes
Fires dominated accidental deaths in several towns. In Davenport Iowa a hospital fire killed 37 elderly women and injured one more. In Fort Dodge four people died in a two apartment house blaze. Monmouth New Jersey saw a 91 year old burned by an electric blanket and dying next day. St Louis fire killed two men and two children in a tenement. Volney New York saw two burned to death and three injured. Maine rural home fire claimed six children with four others hurt.

Soil Conservation Program Push In Scott County Farmers Urged
Scott County PMA urges all farmers to enroll in the 1950 Agricultural Conservation Program to curb erosion and improve soil and water use. Ten million 155 thousand dollars funds conservation practices including terraces outlets sod waterways reservoirs and permanent pasture. Eligible farmers must file a farm work sheet in county office by February 1 1950. Meetings in Commerce Richland and Sandywoods townships scheduled January 13 14 16 to help farmers complete plans.

River rising at Cairo at rate of over feet a day
Weather Bureau reports at noon that the Mississippi Ohio river stage at Cairo is 419.6 feet with a 1.1 foot rise in 24 hours and another similar rise expected. Crest forecasts show Cairo above 52 feet and New Madrid above 41.5 feet, flood risk increasing with rainfall in upper basins. Ferries on the Mississippi in the district closed due to rising levels.

Chamber Adopts Widening of Highway 60 East Resolution
The Sikeston Chamber of Commerce approved a resolution urging the State Highway Department to widen Highway 60 East to four lanes to relieve increasing traffic and a hazardous school crossing near Airport School. The measure, led by President R L Guthne, will be sent to Division 10 engineer M S Gwinn, with other city service clubs likely to follow suit. Also noted was a four Sunday night post office trial from Jan 15 to 10 pm for late mail, and a nominating committee for next year’s officers.

Style show draws three hundred men in bold outfits
About 300 people attended the Men s Style show at the Armory hosted by the Coalesce Club with local businessmen in women s attire. Harry Young Sr acted as master of ceremonies and seventh grade boys dressed as Red Peppers performed. Keith Collins Jack Barger and Ray Carl Marsh presented a pantomime of the Andrew Sisters records. Jack Barger won first prize and Glenn Gurley took second for best dressed.

Juggernaut Toll Rises on Southeast Missouri Roads
Traffic toll in Southeast Missouri rises with six deaths in the past week. W. R. Bunch, 12, of near Kennett, was killed crossing Highway 25 when struck by a truck driven by T. M. Battles near Gobler. Fatal pedestrian crash near Malden claims Quinn resident
Jesse Eli Harper, 56, of Quinn, was killed Saturday night while walking on a highway near Malden. The driver, Mrs. Flossie Tidwell of Paragould, Arkansas, was involved. A coroner's inquest jury ruled the accident unavoidable on her part.

Truck hits train at grade crossing fatally injuring two
A truck carrying a man and two youths was struck by a Cotton Belt train at a grade crossing on Highway 25 north of Malden. Edward Joshua Rogers, 53, died soon after. His nephew Bobby Gene Rogers, 17, died about two hours later. Edward’s son Oscar Bryan Rogers, 18, suffered a broken shoulder and side injuries.
