The Nichols Field base near Manila was transferred to the Philippine government after 25 years of U.S. use under an agreement removing all American installations from the metropolitan area. The site will be rebuilt as an international commercial airport at an initial cost of about 5 million dollars.
Bobby Enterline eight and Dale Enterline ten confessed to repeated vandalism over two weeks. They admitted breaking windows at three churches, a home, a garage, and one business, damaging Berry Palmer Day. Loss estimated about 350 dollars. They yielded an antique pistol and two knives. No charges filed. Chief Wallace took them into custody after spotting them fleeing the Church of Christ premises.
Bids will be opened in New Madrid next Thursday January 15 for recleaning two main ditches in the Richland Drainage District. Ditches No 1 and No 2 include the Ash Slough and Rootwad ditches, the latter being the largest, totaling about 20 miles. They were last cleaned about 14 years ago. Cleaning starts a mile north of Crowder and runs to four miles north of Matthews at the district's south edge.

Lewis I Williams 59 of Matthews died yesterday at Sikeston General Hospital from a disease complication. Born March 31 1889 in Culman Alabama, he lived in Matthews for years. Funeral Sunday at the family home with Rev W A Crawford officiating. Burial in Matthews Cemetery with Albritton service. Survived by eleven children Myrtle Mozelle Ruth Lonnie Annie Edgar Fred Frank Otis Louis at home and Daisy Gray of Los Angeles. Five brothers Calvin Williams Parma Ed Williams Crain Hill John Jim Ezra Williams Culman and three sisters Mary McCombs Cornelia Fought Dora and Ora Keith Huntsville. His wife preceded him in death years ago.
President Truman urged a $6.8 billion aid package for Europe and a $40 tax cut per taxpayer and dependent, plus a $3.2 billion increase in corporate taxes. His 5000 word message called for universal military training, housing programs, expanded unemployment and old-age benefits, plus stronger actions against inflation and discrimination.

Additional contributions listed during the past week support the final drive for the Missouri Delta Community Hospital. The district targets 60,000 more to reach a total participation of 225,000 as funds are collected by the Finance Committee of the Missouri Delta Community Hospital in Sikeston.
The Junior Chamber of Commerce at the Palace Cafe heard two brief talks from Miss A Pearl Smith administrator for the Missouri Delta Community Hospital about staffing and opening plans. She said the hospital, opening around July 1, will be well equipped and face nurse shortages of 12 to 15. The project is the last of 15 backed by the Commonwealth Fund with $425,000 cash and $75,000 in services. total cost is $775,000 with local subscriptions aiming for $275,000. Gilbert Morton of Festus was noted as a national director on the board.
The City Council granted the Junior Chamber of Commerce another year's lease for the Country Club operation from February 1, 1948, and approved sidewalk construction along East Street from Greer to Matthews and from Matthews to Kathleen. Other measures included tax changes, license actions, and fund transfers, with a police report noting 25 fines totaling 299 dollars. The meeting featured remarks by National Directors of the United States Junior Chamber of Commerce and announced a Bootheel Council gathering in New Madrid.
Mrs William Hahs is a surgical patient at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau.
The Finance Committee of the capital acknowledged 4500 in contributions from S. E. Newhouse and sons. Dexter resident Mr. Newhouse gave 1000 in addition to a prior 2000. A 1000 came this week from Robert S. Newhouse of New York City and 500 from S. E. Newhouse Jr. of Pittsburgh.
Jack Lair of Sikeston is believed murdered near a Dallas highway culvert after a New Year trip to the Cotton Bowl. His bruised body, found face down in water about two feet under the surface, showed signs of robbery and possible beating or exposure. Surviving relatives include wife Gladys and son Jack Jr. and siblings Frank Jr., W R Lair, and Mrs Mattingly. Funeral services were held in Sikeston with interment in the Odd Fellows cemetery near Charleston.
E. K. Ponder and H. B. Dudley of the Right-of-Way Department Division 10 Headquarters Missouri State Highway Department departed today for Jefferson City on business. They expect to return Friday.
The second annual tractor operation and maintenance school for 4-H Club leaders from eight Southeast Missouri counties was held in Sikeston at the Sikeston Tractor and Implement Co. Equipment sponsors included Sikeston dealers, University of Missouri extension service, county agents, and Standard Oil. Attendees and speakers from John Deere, International, Allis Chalmers, Case, and local universities attended a two day program that featured demonstrations and a dinner with Rev E D Owen speaking on the humorous side of a minister's life and Marion Clark on soil conservation.
A public meeting at the Armory in Sikeston will discuss universal military training. Col. Conrad G. Follansbee of Fort Leavenworth will outline the plan, purpose, organization, and related aspects, with wide local and national support noted. Invites extend to military, veterans, civic groups, and the general public.
