Henry Wallace announced he will run as an independent candidate on a third party ticket advocating peace and prosperity. Republicans see it as siphoning votes from Democrats while Democrats dispute the claim. This World This Week also notes cold wave deaths in Mexico City and a heavy New York snowstorm with fatalities and transit disruptions.
Southeast Missouri seed growers dominated the Missouri Seed Improvement Association event in Columbia, earning top honors and many prizes. A. J. Renner of Sikeston proposed hosting next year's show in the district, citing regional accessibility and local support.
Mrs Lurryn Atkins died in a Poplar Bluff hospital from injuries suffered Christmas Day in an automobile collision near Bertrand. Her husband Don Atkins was killed instantly and five other family members were injured. Floyd Sparks of Crowder, driver of the oncoming car, was jailed for drunken driving and manslaughter after the crash two miles west of Bertrand on Highway 60.
A grass fire in the 500 block of Kathleen street drew the fire department Tuesday morning. In the afternoon responders checked a trash fire at Sikeston General Hospital.
George Seybold of the Sikeston Veterans Administration office announces extended deadline for reinstatement of veterans life insurance without medical exam from December 31 to July 31, 1948. The extension allows reinstatement of lapsed policies upon two premium payments.
J E Atkins a McKenzie born merchant who lived in Poplar Bluff since 1928 died in a crash. He co owned Stovall stores in Poplar Bluff and St Elmo with Ed Cannon. He was active in the Methodist church Masonic Lodge and Boy Scout work. editorial lauded him as a model citizen and community leader.
The third fund drive for Missouri Delta Community Hospital in Sikeston aims at 60000 more, bringing total local giving to nearly 300000, with Commonwealth Trust contributing about 500000. Over 20,000 has been raised so far in this final push despite holiday travel, as many local individuals and firms who have given before respond again.
The Herald’s year in Sikeston highlights include a Decem ber real estate tax re assay, city and county action to fund the reassessment, and the appointment of special assessors to aid county officials.
Miss Mayme Marshall of 615 N Kingshighway won first place for an elaborate balcony display spelling MERRY CHRISTMAS with a large tree. Second went to Mr and Mrs Robert Mow at 108 N Kingshighway for colored lights around windows and doors. Third split between Mr and Mrs Charles Baugher of 170 Greer Avenue and Mr and Mrs Roy Chaney of 814 East Kathleen for sign lights and Three Wise Men scene. Honorables include many local homes. Everett Scott’s at Taylor and Lynn burned in a Friday night fire caused by an oil stove explosion.
Miss A Pearl Smith arrives from Syracuse New York to oversee equipment staffing and organization for Sikeston’s new hospital. A 25 year veteran nurse and NYU trained administrator, she previously led Unity Hospital in Brooklyn and Nix Memorial Hospital in San Antonio. She will coordinate pre opening work from the Board of Public Works lobby.
Construction at three Southeast Missouri Boy Scout camps raises total capital improvements to 65000 and expands capacity to 160 scouts during Scout week. Camp Lewallen, Senior Base at Lake Wappapello, and Camp Hamilton receive land, buildings, roads, and utilities funded by private donations. work set for completion next June.
In 1947 Sikeston issued building permits totaling $1,066,5635 across 202 approvals. Most activity funded medium price 4 to 5 room homes around $5,000. May was the peak month with $160,190. October reached $151,175 while November dipped to $51,230. City Clerk A C Barrett supervised the permits.
