Open House Highlights New Murray Lane Mission Dedication
Hundreds attended the dedicatory services and open house for the Murray Lane Baptist Mission in Sikeston. Rev C D Butler, new pastor, welcomed guests as the 50 000 plus church addition was praised for its 186 seat auditorium seven classrooms kitchen and restrooms with future parking on a 50 by 90 foot masonry structure built by New Lumber Co Center. The event featured a Baptist Training Union led by Gail Harrison and recalled Butler’s local ties and career from Sikeston High School Southeast Missouri State Cape Girardeau to Manhetta Oklahoma and Fort Worth Texas.

A rural fire left the John Britt family homeless when their two story house on the Link DeWitt farm burned early Tuesday. The Jaycees formed a Special Emergency Committee to aid affected families, starting with the Britts. Flames Trap Children In Second Story Room
Ten miles southeast of Sikeston a two story wooden farm house burned killing eleven year old Jackie Britt and Willard Ales, grandson of the Britt family. Parents John and Helen Britt were injured, one child escaped by wrapping bedding around himself. Fire believed due to a defective flu. Rescue efforts hampered by intense heat. Willard Ales’s mother, Marie AcDole, suffered shock and was hospitalized.

Southwestern Bell Telephone Company presented a $2.0 million check to Mis pouri Deila Community Hospital. John Ponoho Ieft, John D. Nuv, J. M. Bertrand youth George Thomas Foote age 16 died after a home made telephone rig surged with 7200 volts from a REA highline. A 15 year old companion escaped injury while Foote, born June 3 1943 in Detroit, died en route to Missouri Delta Hospital. He had returned to Sikvester High as a sophomore but left to work.

A heavy snowstorm paralyzed southeast Missouri with up to six inches of snow. Three people died in icy highway crashes while more than a dozen injuries occurred across the area. Sikeston marks its 100th year with monthly events led by Centennial Council head John Donoho. January features "peddlers licenses" costing two dollars for the year, to be sold by merchants to every salesperson calling on customers.
