Col Harry E Dudley of Sikeston was elected commanding officer of the 140th Infantry Missouri National Guard after Col George W Phipps retirement ending a twenty year tenure. City Adds Deep Well Pump At Public Plant
The Sikeston Board of Public Works approved buying and installing a new deep well pump for 5000 dollars to boost city water supply. Work starts within ten days and should take about 60 days. The pump, bought from Carloss Well Supply Co. of Memphis, will be placed at the light and power plant grounds or on the Ranney and Center site for the new water tank. It will move 750 gallons per minute, making a third pump in service, with a 400+ feet shaft and 12 inch to 10 inch casing. The motor sits above ground.

Car Damaged by Truck on Front Street
A Buick sedan driven by Mrs James S Kevil was struck broadside by a truck from a side street on Front Street Thursday of last week. Mrs Kevil, her mother Mrs O E Kendall, and her niece Emily Kendall were uninjured. the car suffered damage over 335. Faulty brakes on the truck were suspected as the cause.

Benton Catholic Church Burns in Benton fire
The St Denis Catholic church and its school wing were destroyed by fire shortly before noon Tuesday. Erected in 1901 and 1922 respectively, the buildings were nearly total losses before firemen arrived. Eighty five pupils were in class. Loss estimated at seven thousand dollars, covered by insurance, with funds set aside for new buildings. Temporary quarters to be arranged for the school.

Warm lunches served to over 275 children at school
In recent days the WPA lunchroom at the South Grade School building, funded by the Parent-Teacher Association, has provided warm meals to more than 275 underprivileged children. Nine women from WEA are employed, under supervision of Mrs. C. T. Ola and Mrs. R. D. Sorrells. Today’s meal included greens, candied sweet potatoes, hot buttered rolls, milk, and canned fruit.
