Most Disastrous Ice Storm Grips Southeast Missouri
Sikeston and surround ing district faced the worst ice storm on record with heavy damage to trees and telegraph lines. Four thousand plus phones were out, 42 343 calls in 24 hours, 60 crews and 300 to 400 workers rushed to restore service across Southeast Missouri. Schools postponed reopening, utility lines down, hospitals and factories affected, and REA and SWB crews dispatched from multiple regions to repair damage.

Council Calls Vote on Sewer Bond Proposals in January
At a city council meeting a formal call for a January 29 special election was issued. Two propositions seek $600,000 general revenue bonds for sewer system expansion and $450,000 sewerage revenue bonds to fund extensions with repayment from fees. If only one passes, funds may fund a sewer disposal plant. Street paving was approved on multiple avenues. The council also authorized dedication of Sikeston’s Garden of Memories cemetery.

A gasoline explosion at a filling station in Mast Prairie early this morning killed Bill Upton, 38, of New Madrid. Upton, a Simpson Oil Co. employee for over 15 years, helped unload gasoline when it exploded. Nearby homes caught fire but were saved by firefighters.
