Too Much Land In Cultivation In Scott County Report
The Scott County Agricultural Planning Committee has submitted its plan to the State Planning Board. It proposes removing 37,000 acres from cultivation, reforesting 22,000 acres, and converting the rest to pasture. It also recommends 32,000 acres kept for forage, with about 30,000 legumes. The board cautions that continued nonconservation would lower yields. The plan envisions livestock changes, including a 23 percent cattle increase and an 80 percent poultry rise, with 1934 production levels used as a baseline for hogs and sheep. Former Governor Albert C. Ritchie Dies in Baltimore
Former Maryland governor Albert C. Ritchie died at his Baltimore home Monday morning after a paralytic stroke. He was 60. Ritchie, the country’s leading Maryland figure for 15 years, died with his secretary present. Funeral services were held Wednesday at Christ Protestant Episcopal church, with interment in Greenmount Cemetery. His critical stance on Roosevelt's policies had placed him among intra party opponents.

Tragic Ice Breaks Drowns Eight-Year-Old Girl Near East Prairie

Sikeston Council Increases Police Chief Salary
At a Friday night meeting on February 21 the Sikeston city council passed two ordinances. One bans parking on the north side of Malone avenue and limits south side parking to 15 minutes, to align with State Highway Department plans to widen the street. A second ordinance raises the police chief salary to 100 dollars monthly, with all fees going to the general fund, replacing the previous 50-dollar monthly pay plus fees. The council also read, but has not yet signed, an ordinance eliminating the police judge salary and funding the office on a fee basis. The mayor was authorized to seek a Missouri governor call for a special legislature session on relief measures. A report was requested on water and sanitary line needs and costs. Letters from out-of-town firms and city officials questioned a 50-dollar truck fee ordinance for out-of-town operators, asking for a copy and challenging its legality.

Livestock Men Meet With Officials Over Hanging Case
Claude McGee condemned to die at Benton for the murder of W. Tom Carleton at Gray's Point last May. His appeal to the State Supreme Court seeks a new hearing within days before the death sentence set for next Tuesday. He and three other prisoners escaped Benton county jail February 11 and were recaptured six days later in Charleston in critical condition. he has since recovered and awaits the hanging date.

Mrs. Etna DeField, wife of Mississippi County assessor Ward De Field, was acquitted by a circuit court jury in Charleston of felonious assault against Mrs. Myrtle Parks from the Sept 28, 1932 incident. The trial lasted about three hours with a 30 minute jury deliberation. DeField had previously been acquitted of first degree murder in the killing of Mrs. Rummell and was also cleared Monday on concealed weapons charges. The judge was James A. Reeves after Judge Frank Kelly was disqualified.
