At the annual stockholders meeting Chester Lake will dedicate the new office building and warehouse for the Scott New Madrid Mississippi Cooperative Association, representing REA Administrator Harry Slattery. The cooperative, nearly five years old, has over 2000 members and 640 miles of lines serving farm homes in Scott New Madrid Mississippi Stoddard Bollinger and Cape Girardeau counties. Government loan payments are paid several thousand dollars in advance.
Marylin Spradlin fourteen year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Edward Spradlin near Commerce died after a fall from an automobile driven by her uncle and aunt Mr and Mrs Fred Sprenger of Fornfelt. She apparently opened a rear door and was thrown to the pavement sustaining a brain concussion. Funeral at Commerce Methodist church and Oakdale Cemetery burial. Survived by parents two sisters Helen and Dean a brother Edward Jr of the Merchant Marine three half sisters in St Louis and a half brother in Temple Texas. Mrs Bert Gentry and Mrs Jack Johnson visited in Cape Girardeau.
Floyd Gooch a 29 year old Matthews area farmer was accidentally shot Tuesday night when a rifle in a boat fired as he stepped into it. He was taken to Sikeston hospital where surgery to remove the bullet was performed. His condition was listed as fair. Present were Van Fincher and Lamar Bishop. He farms with his brother Lloyd Gooch.
About $1600 has been collected to date in the annual Boy Scout financial drive in Sikeston, reported by chairman L. M. Standley. The drive is not complete and expected gifts may raise the total to support an expanding Scout program. Other towns in the Sikeston district have not yet conducted drives. Miner plans its drive this weekend.
Rev R M Talbert pastor of the Sikeston Christian church is named Roll Call Chairman for the Sikeston Red Cross Roll Call announced by County Chairman John J Reiss Drive details will be announced next week and the drive will be held on 1 March
Two Missouri Institute of Aeronautics student officers Lieut. Howard Kramer and Lieut. Bob Lauson traveling north on Highway 61 near Sikeston struck a parked 1936 Terraplane as it sat partly on the road. The collision sheared off their left front wheel and fender and sent their car skidding four-tenths of a mile upright with no injuries reported. The Terraplane belonged to W. A. Crick of Morehouse. Russell Davis, 17, said he was driving it up the road before fleeing to a nearby house. The officers found the car empty when they returned.
Treasury Department War Finance Committee of Sikeston Missouri acknowledges Scott County's Fourth War Loan success. W A Myers chairman credits Clint H Denman and local efforts for high sales and Coast Guard Band appearance, expressing deep gratitude for assistance and encouragement.
The American Institute of Accountants reports that 600 business leaders in 1216 centers urge simplification of federal revenue laws. They fault absent good faith recognition by taxpayers and long term policy, arguing self assessment relies on taxpayer honesty for effective enforcement.
Members of the Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars will assist each Thursday afternoon starting next week in making surgical dressings in a room over Buckner Ragsdale Store run by Mrs. C. D. Matthews Jr. The group met last night at the Dunn Coffee Shop with Mrs. Roy Wagner, president, presiding. The next meeting is set for March 15 at the Dunn Coffee Shop with Mesdames Charles Lindley, Myrtle Moll and George Steele as hostesses.
Two Scott county men from Kelso were elected to leadership roles in a Cape Girardeau based District Guernsey Breeding Association last week. Joe F. Diebold was named president and Pete Scherer became director.
In a morning letter attorney Eugene Munger of Benton states he will seek the Democratic nomination for Scott County prosecuting attorney. He plans to file officially later. Mr and Mrs W R Binford of Marble Hill Mo visit their daughter Miss Helen Binford for the weekend.
Scott County surpassed its Fourth War Loan quota by 140 percent with noon reports showing 927 928 dollars in sales against a 660 000 target. Major buyers included Missouri Institute of Aeronautics and International Shoe Company, while fourteen towns exceeded 100 percent in their district drives.
Sikeston Lions Club sponsored a buffet dinner at the Dunn Hotel tonight for Air Wac Caravan members and invited civic and service club couples. Luncheon notes quoted attendees and a Boy Scout drive commendation from Chairman L. M. Standley. Members reported sons in service in Central College, Marshall Islands, Santa Ana, Camp Howze, England, Paris Island, Randolph Field, and Hawaii.
Brenda Gale two month old daughter of Mr and Mrs B F Sullivan of 502 Kendall Street was found dead in bed early Wednesday morning after being fed the previous day The funeral service was held at 2 o clock this afternoon with Rev J W Hoffert of the Church of the Nazarene presiding Burial followed in Memorial Park Cemetery Taylor service The infant is survived by the parents one sister Edna Marie and grandparents Mr and Mrs Frank Sullivan of Crowder and Mr and Mrs Van Fincher of near Matthews
A weather brief cites Meteorologist Albert E Klamm of the Missouri Institute of Aeronautics forecasting a rain storm turning to snow tonight. Weekend will bring clear skies and low temperatures around 10 degrees with a high near 47 degrees the past week. Last Friday opened with a 7 degree low and Monday’s snowstorm produced the season’s heaviest fall, followed by torrential rains and thunder.
Government approves Sikeston food locker plant owned by Harold Lumsden. Installation could start in about 30 days if plans mature. The plant will be built in the Jones building near the Missouri Pacific Railroad tracks in east Sikeston.
An explosion of 17 oil stoves at S. E. Wiseman’s home at 316 Kendall street yesterday afternoon destroyed one room and damaged the rest of the house. The residence, owned by C. E. Ziegenhorn, suffered substantial structural damage.
