Cold snap forecast with snow likely in coming days

Scout Financial Drive Under Way in Sikeston District
Thirty five Boy Scout leaders and others attended a Dunn Hotel breakfast today then began raising funds for the Sikeston district for the coming year. Finance chairman J. M. Standley led the drive with a district goal of 3000, a 30 percent increase over last year, hoping Sikeston raises about 2500. Advance gifts chair C. C. Butler reports 1100 already received.

Rationing Office Closed Until February 19
The Rationing office at City Hall, under Mrs. Emmett Parham, closed this morning and will remain shut until Saturday February 19. Mrs. Parham and her husband, a former Missouri Institute of Aeronautics mechanic, traveled to Jerusalem Arkansas for a brief visit with his parents, then planned to Appleton Arkansas to visit his mother. Mr. Parham is expected to enter military service soon with the Air Corps.

Results of the March of Dimes campaign for infantile paralysis prevention and cure in Scott county were announced by Dr. W. O. Finney of Oran. County totals include Benton 40 dollars Chaffee 125 Fernfeld 71.45 Slimo 61 Kelso 25 Morley 19.50 New Hamburg 15.10 Oran 143.35 Rock View 13.55 Sikeston 545.92 and Harvey Parks Airport 105.25 with Sikeston contributions totaling 652 dollars. Funds go to the National Foundation with half returned to Scott county. theater collections are not included.

Malden Cadets Escape After Plane Crash Near Sikeston
Two aviation cadets from Malden Airport escaped serious injury when their plane crashed southwest of Sikeston during a buddy flight. Lieut. Mitchell said the aircraft was badly wrecked but the student flyers were only shaken and received attention from Harvey Parks Airport ambulance.

County Farmers To Meet Feb 18
Farmers of Scott County will hold an all day session at Benton on Friday February 18 with the Farm Bureau in the morning and the Tenth Soils and Crops Conference in the afternoon. Programs include call to order at 9 45 a m minutes read by Mrs Ernest Hanselman reports from Farm Bureau officers and committees and talks by extension staff and soil and crops specialists. A noon lunch organized by Mrs Fred Forbis and Mrs Sam Branson. The launch will be held in the court house with visitors to bring sandwiches or a pie.

District Leads In Bond Buying In Missouri Fourth War Loan

The Taylor Funeral Home bought a 124 by 124 foot lot on Center street between the Catholic school building and the Loomis Mayfield residence from Lee Hunter of St. Louis facing Malone Park. Plans call for a brick or stone modern funeral home with a two family apartment above and rapid construction to begin. Orville Taylor says it will be one of the region’s most modern funeral homes. A. War Department interception of a shortwave broadcast from Japan said Sikeston area family son James S. Griffin, radio operator third class on the submarine Canophis, is doing well. Griffin was in Manila and may have been on Corregidor when it fell. The Canophis was later scuttled after Japanese bombing. Three other Sikeston district youths, Capt James Derris, Charles Brannum, and Stanley Wallace, are listed as prisoners. Stancil and another local man were also noted as prisoners of war.

The Sikeston Auction Company, organized in 1938 by ten stockholders, is now owned by four of them Fremont Goetz Ed Cline Paul Heckemeyer and Jean Hirschberg. They acquired all real estate personal property assets and goodwill and will run the business similarly with periodic improvements. Sales continue each Tuesday and Saturday under Packers and Stockyards Act federal regulation and Missouri state rules.
