The Missouri weather pattern this past week produced widespread snow and ice causing heavy traffic delays. Forecasters warn that in thirty days thawing could worsen highway frost, risking subsoil failure under heavy loads without gradual temperature moderation. Roads may be posted and crews deployed to reinforce soft spots and prevent extensive damage.
The cab of a 1934 Chevrolet truck owned by Bob Limbaugh was destroyed by fire Monday at 8 am on North Kingshighway. No one was in the truck. cause is unknown. Fire department responded and contained the blaze.
Late WPA progress bulletin details costs, completion rates, and payrolls for multiple Scott county projects including street improvements, school grounds, sidewalks, and county weaving rooms. It also announces four new Southeast Missouri projects starting February 17 with crews and locations across Stoddard, Cape Girardeau, Mississippi, and Butler counties.
The U S Supreme Court unanimously invalidated Louisiana's tax aimed at large newspapers and film advertising, deeming it unconstitutional as a suppression of a free press. Justice Sutherlin read the decision stressing a free press as a vital government check and noting the tax imposed a 2 percent license levy on newspapers with weekly circulation over 20,000.
Carl Luper, manager of the State Experiment Station near Sikeston, was reelected president of the Scott County Farm Bureau at the Benton meeting last Thursday. New officers include Roy M. Johnson vice president C M Mayfield secretary and Alwyn Gasser treasurer. Executive committee members appointed from Sikeston Morley Benton and other towns. Reports covered county farmer results and experiments with a harmonica band entertainment during intermission and a resolution praising local newspapers for publicity support in 1935.
A. R. Towse reports the State Highway Commission is considering approving a location for Route SN in Scott County starting near Ilmo and running southeast to the Campbell school area. The proposed path crosses Cottonbelt tracks, runs along Second street, passes Macedonia school, and connects with the constructed segment near Campbell school. Citizens may request a hearing before February 24 by notifying Mr. Towse at Sikeston.
Lester Wilkinson, treasury accounts office representative, arrived in Sikeston to begin work at the local Works Progress Administration office. He will audit and check district payrolls before forwarding them to Jefferson City.
Tonight the Sikeston Kiwanis Club hosts former Dean Douglas of the State Teachers College at Cape Girardeau to discuss Abraham Lincoln. George W. Kirk announces future speakers including Prof. W. T. Daugherty next Thursday. Washington and Lincoln birth anniversaries are celebrated tonight. A farmer’s meeting is planned for February 27 with speaker J T Stimson and extension agent R L Furry expected. Last Thursday’s session included Scout Commissioner C G Morrison and archer E C Trickey. The club publicly thanked Kiwanian Clint H Denman for years of publicity work with The Sikeston Herald.
Miss Irene Cox daughter of Mr and Mrs J F Cox Sr married Charles Edward Pancoast of Little Rock Arkansas at the Cox home on Southwest Street Friday night February 7 with Rev R M Talbert officiating. Only relatives attended and the couple were unattended. Mrs Pancoast has operated the Postal Telegraph office in the Scott County Milling Company building for years. Mr Pancoast formerly worked for the State Highway Department here and is now bound for the University of Arkansas medical school in Little Rock for the year.
Two civil suits filed in circuit court against Judson Boardman of Sikeston arise from a November 12, 1935, automobile crash two miles south of Sikeston on Highway 61. Ruth Martin of Greensburg Indiana died when her head was severed. her mother Edith Martin seeks 10,000 in damages for injuries. The Martins claim Boardman failed to pass a pickup driven by G. E. Cathey. Both cases set for the March term.
Charles Beal Moore Greer Jr. and Fay King were the overnight guests at the home of Miss Mary Lou McCutchen in Blytheville Arkansas, daughter of Mr and Mrs O W McCutchen, on Tuesday.
Twenty three members of Boy Scout Troop 43 with Scoutmaster O T Elder were hosted by the Sikes ton Lions Club at a fish supper in the armory last Thursday. Cape Girardeau Scout commissioner C G Morrison attended and spoke on Scouting principles. Archery expert Clyde Trickey of Cape Girardeau shared archery insights and tips. Luncheon plans at Hotel Marshall yesterday led to minstrel event plans to be announced.
W H Lewis, Sikeston Negro, faced charges of stealing a shirt and cigarette case from Jerry Vaughn, with whom he roomed. They settled between themselves and were dismissed. Fuvell Samples fined 3 dollars plus costs for disturbing the peace and fighting, paid in full. Earl Smith colored charged with disturbing the peace and drunkenness, fined 3 dollars and costs, to be paid in installments. Scott Thomas fined for disturbing the peace by shooting a pistol into the air, with arrangements made to pay.
The State Highway Department purchased two Chevrolet coupes and a pickup truck this week from Mitchell-Sharp Chevrolet Company.
Funeral services for Mrs. John Chaney were held at St. Francis Xavier Catholic church with Rev. T. R. Woods officiating. Interment followed at Memorial Park cemetery by Albritton service. The 71 year old Sikeston resident died Monday shortly before 1 pm. She was born in New Madrid County and lived near Sikeston all her life. Survived by husband, one daughter Mrs. Earl Riga, two granddaughters, a brother Leroy Moore, and several nieces and nephews.
The Republican State Committee fixed 1051 delegates for the convention in St Louis on April 27. St Louis will receive 221 delegates and Jackson County including Kansas City 74, with the rest allocated to rural districts. Delegates are apportioned at one for every 500 votes cast for the US Senate nominee in 1934.
Manuel H. Davis of Kansas City has filed his declaration with the Secretary of State and announced his candidacy for Missouri Lieutenant-Governor on the Republican ticket, subject to the August 1936 primaries. He has served four years in the House and four in the State Senate representing a Kansas City district.
Jefferson City February 11 L D Thompson announced his candidacy for Secretary of State subject to the August 4 primary. He is the sole Republican to express intent to run and vows to base his campaign on his public record and Republican achievements since Lincoln. He says no ties to other candidates, factions, or organizations beyond his own and the party.
Twelve Sikeston Kroger Stores representatives joined Carbondale Ill employees for a Sunday meeting on February 9. The event awarded about 3000 in prizes for the district's President's Cup win in 1935. E T Singleton, district manager, received 100. A H Morrill presided and presented the cup to W H Bracy.
The past week brought severe cold, rain and snow with ice in streets. Temperatures ranged from 2 above to 37 degrees, with 1.75 inches of snow and .28 inches of rain. A new cold wave threatens the southeastern state, likely bringing more cold and possible snow in coming days.
Five inmates at the Frankfort Kentucky state reformatory fled in a truck after escaping from the chair factory last week. The previous day four other inmates also escaped by breaking out of the same chair factory facility.
Two Cape Girardeau inmates Claude McGee and John Manor escaped Benton county jail with Caryle Payne and Buck Carter. Police chase spans Scott New Madrid and Cape counties with Illinois aid. Carter captured. McGee and Manor still at large amid murder charges and gunfights over the jail break.
