Howard DeWitt a Salcedo farmer shot John Deal on January 13 and claimed self defense. Justice of the Peace Jos L Myers ruled the evidence sufficient for preliminary hearing, the packed council room showing high public interest.
Scott County headed the district for January with ten accidents in Troop E territory covering 22 Southeast Missouri counties. The month produced 10 deaths and 70 injuries statewide. Butler County ranked second with eight accidents and no fatalities.
Sikeston voters will decide on a proposed mill tax to support the public library at the April 5 regular city election. The proposal was presented by the library board chair and Woman's Club members who have supported the library, with Kiwanis plans for a local hospital also outlined.
Arrests for operating automobiles without 1938 state licenses start February 16. State authorities announce the deadline and instruct patrolmen to warn motorists not displaying new license plates.
The Sikeston Parent-Teacher Association marked its first local chapter anniversary, the state organization’s silver jubilee, and the National Congress of Parents and Teachers forty first anniversary with a triple celebration attended by about 130 parents and teachers. Activities included a reminiscence playlet and candle lightings honoring founders Alice Birney and Phoebe Hearst.
Scott County bonds worth 50000 were sold in Benton to Commerce Trust Co of Kansas City at 242 percent interest with a five dollar premium. Bonds dated March 1 1938 mature 10000 each year from 1939 to 1943 with semiannual interest September 1 and March 1. Other bids included Whitacker and Co St Louis 2.7 percent no premium and Collender Burke McDonald Kansas City 2 percent with 39.50 premium.
The House approved a revised crop control bill by a 263 to 135 roll call, sending it to the Senate. The measure extends soil conservation payments, imposes quotas on major crops if supplies loom large, limits withdrawals of acreage, and funds a wheat crop insurance program with a 100 million dollar insurance corps and 10 thousand dollar individual payments. Research labs will be opened in four regions.

State Highway Patrol squads arrested Buddy Crews and Obed Mallory near Dudley after a Sunday night taxi heist in Poplar Bluff. They were linked to a spree of Saturday night robberies in Malden and later jailed in Poplar Bluff.
Burl Davis an insurance representative from Caruthersville reported to New Madrid officers at 8 this morning that two men and a young woman abducted him south of Sikeston just after midnight robbed him of 130 dollars of company money and his 1937 blue Ford coach. He walked 14 miles to New Madrid after they dumped him on a highway near Highway 61. The car bore Missouri license 181 901 and the trio, strangers to him, knew the roads well and spoke little. Davis had been traveling toward Caruthersville after business in Cape Girardeau.
Levi Bailey 1 year old hot tamale peddler in Sikeston waived preliminary hearing and was bound over to the March term of the circuit court charged with criminal mistreatment of two young girls. The case, scheduled before Justice of the Peace William S. Smith, moves to Benton for trial.
The Junior Woman's Club met Tuesday afternoon at Mrs. Har vey Johnson's home with Mrs. H. J. Welsh as hostess. Associate hostesses were Mrs. Bill Baker and Mrs. Wm. Northington. The group set a benefit bridge party for Friday night February 18 at the Marshall Hotel with 25 tables. New members welcomed included Mesdames Harold Trowbridge, C. T. Keller, Frances Webb, Meredith Lee, Duree Conrad, and Fremont Goetz.
Southeast Missouri end of the warm spell arrives as wind and rain begin today. Forecasters predict much colder weather to follow in the district after several pleasant days.
Sikeston will inaugurate a new city government on Saturday February 12 with Mayor Russell Felker and Scouts from Troops 41 42 and 45 taking charge. Police chief Dallas Simpson city collector Norman Jonas and a slate of aldermen ward officers and a city attorney will assume duties after meetings with the council. The day includes mass assembly flag raising and patrol demonstrations at Legion Park ending with a formal flag lowering.
The Will Rogers Memorial Commission approved a 300000 museum plan for Claremore, with construction to begin around March 15. The permanent memorial to Oklahoma's cowboy humorist will occupy a five acre tract beside the Oklahoma Military Academy and include three galleries a memorial room and a lobby housing a bronze Rogers statue.
The Southeast Missouri Reserve Officers Association met Tuesday February 8 in Major C L Malone’s office. Members heard talks on dentist’s duty during combat and military history and chaplain duties. Rev E W Milner was welcomed as a new member. next meeting set for March 15 in the same location.
Dr H L Smith owner of the building on New Madrid street formerly home to the Ladies Toggery says he has rented the former site to Cut-Rate Department Stores. The front will be remodeled before opening and no opening date has been set.
Supt. R. A. Harper of the Sikes ton public schools will be in Columbia Friday and Saturday to attend the winter meeting of school superintendents of Missouri.
More than 600 farmers in Sikeston attended the second annual John Deere Day at Sikeston Tractor and Implement Company marking the agency’s second year under this management. The event featured four motion pictures, a buffet lunch, and prize drawings for a planter a plow and a collar. About 300 joined the evening showing, while the day’s program highlighted farm machinery displays and demonstrations. Participants included Ed Byers who presented the films and local staff W E Hedden and W O Scott with veterans G D Harris Ralph Mc Gee Howard V Myers Walker Uht and W H Kiuch. D A Reese remains unchanged in Barnes Hospital St Louis Mrs Reese staying with him.
Kiwanis Club backs an endowment fund to build a modern hospital in Sikes ton pending city qualification. A sponsor must provide 40 000, plus site and utilities, with 10 000 to 15 000 additional operating costs first year. Final project costs 200 000 to 275 000, including a nurses residence and possible training school.
Members of Troop 41 of the Sikeston Boy Scouts will be guests of sponsors the Sikeston Junior Chamber of Commerce at the regular dinner meeting Tuesday night at the Palace Cafe. Miss Ruth Moore of Kewanee spent the weekend with her parents here.
Construction of Sikeston recreation park country club house is slated to start Wednesday February 16 with city and WPA funds. The project will be open to all residents on payment of maintenance fees, with no membership caps, and a swimming pool is planned pending library brick work completion.
