The Herald looks back on 1956 achievements during its final week of Volume 53 and thanks readers and advertisers for their support. It expresses hope for continued good relations, greater community service, and best wishes for happiness and prosperity in 1957.
A chaotic late May scene recounts a fatal truck incident a mile south of Morehouse with Johnson and Don- Ui among the injured. Multiple cars collided on Highway 61 causing several injuries and a three-car pull-up further south near Delta.
A local court bound over multiple defendants on charges including robbery and grand larceny. James Brown Corel Mitchell John Nelson and others faced bonds of 1000 each or 2000 in sureties as detectives outlined a spree involving a post office cash and a general store heist. A separate case involved a fatal assault near Newton Premeyer with four men charged and a vehicle collision report filed.
One of twenty fatalities reported from traffic accidents on area highways over the Christmas weekend was a man killed south of New Madrid on a gravel road. The report from headquarters of Troop Booth Owre details the crash, with witness notes and the victim’s identity to be released by authorities. The event occurred near the Missouri line as lawmen investigated the scene and urged caution on rural routes during holiday travel.
A special election will be held on Saturday for Diehstadt residents within the district to decide whether the district should be dissolved.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at Blodset Baptist Church for Bertha May Dodson who died at her home Sunday in the town. Burial followed at the Old Morles Cemetery. Pastor Rex Jammie-Edmondson led the last rites with Nunneclee Funeral Home of Sikheon in charge of arrangements.
A cafe in Simpson reported a robbery with a break in through a window on the west side. The suspect attempted entry at a pinball machine area and escaped with $18 in nickels.

James Mc Beaird reports slow reservations for this month’s chamber lunch meeting. Clinton Bo Luttrell of the Federal Reserve Bank of St Louis will be guest speaker at the Rus-Gc Roch Inn on Thursday noon luncheon. Beaird urges prompt reservations to know headcount.
Charleston resident Calvin French, 68, a World War II veteran, died at the Veterans Hospital in Outwood Kentucky. He was born in Kansas and survived by his brothers Calvin French of Route 20 Charleston and a sister Rosetta Ripper, with additional sisters Bimnetta Beach of East Prairie and Burt Jones of Aiken, Ky.
Fragmented local notice describes agricultural acreage yields and individuals, mentioning MO Bena Malawct, Joe White, Billy Owen, and routings toward Charleston. It notes bales per acre figures around 264 and 2 per acre with unclear context.
Robert E King died recently and services were conducted at Gravel Hill Church in Bell City. The funeral proceeded to Gravel Hill Cemetery with burial led by Rex Walker. Survived by wife and multiple grandchildren and children. King was a member of the General Baptist Church.
Dr Martin of East Prairie was robbed by two teenage Black men who forced him to hand over cash after threatening him with a wrench and pistol. Sheriff Scott arrested the suspects, who fled in a truck later found with theft evidence. footprints and prints linked them to the crime as prosecutors pursued bail denials.
Police and highway patrol combined to arrest four men linked to a strong arm robbery at a home near the South Wye. The suspects Harold Liasd Stout Ronnie Nei Worth Bills Doyle Worth Billy Gone Myers and Alfou were taken into custody and face New Madrid court action. Bruce reportedly admitted the robbery and parolees face revocation.
The Missouri State Highway Commission approved a 226 mile tentative Interstate location through Scott and Mississippi counties from Sikeston east to the state line. The plan includes graded paving, controlled access, and new bridges with outer roads to manage traffic as designs progress.
Leslie Boone Howle, a Johns Market employee, died in a house fire in Charleston early Saturday. Firefighters found him on his bed after entering the home, with the blaze triggering fatal injuries to his floor area. The incident leaves Mrs Howle, a local teacher, coping with the tragedy as investigators begin to determine the cause.
Mrs Borsha Dodson Mie longtime Blodgett resident died at her home following illness. She was a devoted member of the Banat church, widow of Tee Dod Son, and mother of Surya and Nach Dodson, with many relatives in Commerce and Blodgett. Her death notably leaves Vi Ova Toll and other family members.
Mrs. Leen Dannenmueiler of Benton was chosen as leader of the Homemakers Council. The event occurred at the town meeting with council members and local officials in attendance.
The event records an installation ceremony at Morles in December with officials including Chapter head, Secretary, and other leaders. Dignitaries presented past jewels to board members and the community honored a Worthy Matron. readers joined in songs and salutes as the ceremony closed with benediction and refreshments.
