Health Unit Approved by Voters in Scott County
In a rare vote, Scott County residents approved establishing a county health unit 967 to 138 amid low turnout. A modest tax set at one mill per dollar of assessed valuation will fund the unit, with plans to hire one licensed physician and up to four staff. Unofficial precinct results noted voter concern over taxes and skepticism toward public expense. Miss Sikeston Beauty Contest Set Friday Night
Miss Sikeston will be selected Friday night at the Malone Theatre at 8 15 o clock under the Junior Chamber of Commerce. Fifteen contestants and sponsors are listed with judges from Portageville Cairo and Charleston. After the crown, a coronation ball follows at the Country Club for members and guests. Wanda Carlton Leaves Polio Ward for Home Party
An eight year old girl Wanda Carlton of Chaffee who had infantile paralysis in June and was bedridden at Bethesda Hospital in St Louis celebrated a going home party with ice cream and cake for 20 polio victims before walking out with a slight limp. Also in the report J C Johnson of Kansas City was appointed Informational Supervisor in the Missouri Division of Employment Security to develop a public relations program.

First Delivery of New Crop Corn and Beans Made Today
The Scott County Milling Company in Sikeston received the first 1949 crop corn and soybeans at its elevators today. John Mosely on a 160 acre farm delivered yellow hybrid corn grown on 50 acres, plus 25 acres cotton. the rest is soybeans and pasture. C J Stancil from East Prairie delivered 150 acres of soybeans including 8 acres Hawkeye, with 100 acres cotton and 60 acres corn, the balance small grain and pasture. Weather and field notes indicate corn is early in Sikeston district with late fields to mature in a few weeks. 1949 expected to be a very good corn year in the district. cotton and soybeans also seen to yield well this fall.

Farmers Plan To Secure More Cotton Pickers
About 100 cotton producers from Southeast Missouri met at the New Madrid courthouse to discuss securing labor for the district’s harvest. State Employment Division representatives attended and outlined three labor sources local farm workers transient workers from nearby states and Mexican seasonal workers. Some attendees favored negotiations with Mexico for seasonal workers while others urged growers to actively engage labor agencies to find help.

Thrift Homes Open for Daily Inspection in Sikeston
Joel A. Montgomery announces that Thrift Homes are open for daily inspection. The first unit was opened July 31 at the corner of William and Montgomery streets, near the Clayton addition, in Sikeston. Several two and three bedroom homes are shown and can be built in one week. Lydia Chaney is expected home Sunday from Barnes Hospital in St. Louis after treatment.

District Balanced Farming Action Day draws near 3000 crowd
About three thousand people attended Southeast Missouri Balanced Farming Action Day held at J. B. Simpkins farm near East Prairie in Mississippi county. Visitors watched seeding pasture building a septic tank and redecorated farmhouse while specialists from Missouri College of Agriculture explained exhibits from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

First Bale of Cotton Ginned at Charleston Missouri
The Highway Gin Company on Highway 60 east of Charleston produced the first bale of the 1949 cotton crop in Missouri. The bale weighed 450 pounds and was grown on Fair Fields Farm owned by Mr. and Mrs. Frank Phillips. The gin is owned by Joel McCracken and the cotton variety is DPL-15 planted April 23 after soil treatment.

Work to start on a 94 928 dollar bridge at Wahite over the Little River Drainage canal west of Morehouse. J A Tobin Construction of Kansas City Kansas will build a 26 foot roadway bridge with reinforced concrete piles and steel beams.
