Two Youths Die In Separate Accidents In Week End
A 22 year old Vanderbilt senior John Albert Drinkwater of Charleston died at 3 20 a m Sunday while returning to Nashville with three fellow students after a crash caused by a drunken driver at an intersection. In Missouri a 17 year old Lilbourn student Larry Strickland died after a farm tractor rollover in New Madrid County. Drinkwater was born Aug 22 1938 in Cape Girardeau and had lived most of his life in Charleston. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church with Vanderbilt students serving as pallbearers.

Student basketball player dies in farm tractor accident
Larry Irvin Strickland 19 a Lilbourn high school student and 2 star on the basketball team died after a farm tractor overturned while being driven by Louis Hampton Jr. after a 4 H parade. He suffered a fractured skull and died at Missouri Delta Community Hospital Sikeston. Funeral at Lilbourn High School gym 2 PM Monday with Rev Marion Gibson. Burial in Mounds Park Cemetery near New Madrid.

Sikeston Boy Struck Crossing To Reach School Bus
Porter Edward Brewer a nine year old from Sikeston was struck by a truck on Salcedo Road near his home while rushing to board a school bus driven by Rev. Jimmie Denbow. Porter suffered a fractured skull and broken collar bone but is expected to recover. His sister Brenda 6 watched from the porch. Reverend Denbow aided Porter at the scene and Porter was taken to Missouri Delta Community Hospital with his family.

City Election Fails To Stir Much Interest
An unofficial tally shows only 2,132 of about 6,000 registered voters cast ballots, far below last year’s turnout. Buc Schrader won the police judge post, A P Veasman and Don Pasaka were elected aldermen, Rev Jimmie Denbow captured Ward II, and Taylor Noles retained Ward IV. An annexation measure passed 1,527 to 406. Absentee ballots totaled 45 with 46 mailed. The city council will be sworn in Friday.
