Scott County votes against gas tax proposal in statewide vote
Scott county joined other sections of the state in a decisive Tuesday vote opposing the proposed gasolene tax increase for road funds from two to four cents per gallon. In Scott county 4736 voted against while 2202 supported. New Madrid county stood alone in southeast Missouri in favor, as 33 counties voted for the increase.

Funeral Sunday for Aged Blodgett Woman
Funeral services were held last Sunday at the Blodgett Methodist church for Mrs. Elzina Hodges Bradley wife of William F. Bradley prominent farmer. She died Saturday at home and burial was in Blodgett cemetery. Born September 19 1963 in Folsomville Indiana she married Bradley in 1892 and remained active in church. Survivors include her husband a son S A Bradley of Sikeston a foster daughter Dora McPherson of Alton nine grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Mr and Mrs Jam Andres and Mr and Mrs B Y Owen will spend the weekend in St Louis with friends.

Alleged Robbers in Jail at Jackson
Clarence V. Maddox of Pontiac Michigan and Paul Christian of Dexter are jailed in Jackson after being linked by Thurman Abbott of Dexter to the Gordonville bank holdup on February 21 and the Sedgewickville store robbery for which $365 was taken. Abbott implicates both men and another, with Maddox and Christian denying the charges as hearings await. Oklahoma Negro Killed Near New Madrid Sunday Night
An Oklahoma man named John Scott about 70 was killed when he walked into a moving truck on Highway 61 near New Madrid Missouri. The Pearl Grange Fruit Exchange of Benton Harbor owned the truck. Scott was en route to visit relatives in the area. Funeral services were held at Richards Funeral Home in New Madrid. A second fatality occurred in Missouri when Joseph Edward Beasley 20 of St Louis died from a spinal injury after a Route 70 crash near Ironton. Beasley had faced prior charges for careless driving.

Wm L Legrand a retired farmer died at his Benton home Monday. He was born September 14 1888 near Benton and lived there all his life. He belonged to St Denis Catholic Church St Josephs Sodality Knights of Columbus and Western Catholic Union. Funeral mass was at St Denis Church yesterday with Rev Joe Legrand of New Athens Ill as celebrant. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Surviving are his wife seven sons Dennis William Jr Allan Benton Paul East St Louis Harold Eldorado two daughters Sister Rosabel Columbus and Sister Angelica Shelby and 13 brothers Rev Joe John Leo Lawrence Chaffee Zeno Adam and Andrew Legrand.
