Orting residents denounce a man running a matrimonial bureau that promises wives for men in Milwaukee. He allegedly urged letters from women and even used a Puyallup interurban conductor to contact locals. A married Orting woman warned she received his mail and feared trouble if her husband had been home.
The United States led global coal production since 1889 but in 1911 faced a smaller growth gap versus Great Britain and Germany. US output rose sharply from 1899 to 1911, while Britain’s and Germany’s totals shifted differently, with combined UK and Germany still ahead of the US by about 66 million tons, as per a U S Geological Survey Bulletin.
In Somerville district court Judge Day sentences William Y Daly to a year in Middlesex jail for nonsupport of wife and child. The wife says she washed for food while he drank. The judge notes under state law the wife can claim the husband’s wages during confinement and orders 50 cents per day from the jail superintendent.
Judge Landis hears merchandising defendant Eugene Stockton explain crooked dice and marked cards used by gamblers to fleece victims. Stockton admits mailing advertising for crooked dice and rules for defrauding victims, detailing dice construction and how electricity aids fraud. London reports Greek forces enter Saloniki as Balkan allies press east toward Constantinople. Crown Prince Constantine orders surrender of Turkish troops under conditions, with 25 000 Turks paroled. Foreigners safe. Port Camarijna and a town on the railway to Constantinople seized, expanding footholds and extending the Thrace campaign. Turkish claims of defeat doubted. Adrianople holds.
