German Law Bans Phosphorus Use in Matches

The Reichstag passed a law barring white or yellow phosphorus in match making after January 1 1908. Interior Secretary von Posadowsky-Wehner warned denying proof of phosphorus harm to bone structure is like ignoring the sun. He said phosphorus causes delayed bone necrosis and can be hereditary, affecting families. Wurm urged an operative date of January 4 1905 but opponents sought delays over patent process concerns.

Pennsylvania Protects Bullfrogs As State Game

A new Pennsylvania bill signed by Governor Pennypacker places bullfrogs among protected game. It bans catching or killing them from July 1 to November 1, with a $25 fine per offense payable to an alderman or justice of the peace. The act could impact rural frog farming and marketing.
