Panhandle forecast calls for fair weather tonight and Thursday with a low of 40 to 45 and high near 79. Five day outlook shows temperatures averaging 3 to 6 degrees above normal with highs 65 to 75 and lows in the 40s, little or no precipitation. Local temps list Sept 28 77-33, Sept 29 78-40, Sept 30 10 a.m. 78-45.
A Nebraska GOP caravan stops in Sidney on Saturday with U S Senator Roman Hruska as the keynote. He is expected to urge opposition to the current national administration at a noon luncheon for about 250 at the Fort Sidney Motor Hotel. Gerald Matzke, acting Cheyenne County Republican chairman, lists about 20 nominees including Rep. Dave Martin, Lt. Gov. Dwight Burney, Lt. Gov. aspirant Charles Thone, Secretary of State Frank Marsh, and Attorney General Clarence Beck. The group arrives around 11 45 a m, hosts a pep band, lunches 12 to 2 p m, then proceeds to Farmers Day activities in Kimball.
St Patrick's Parish invites the public to tour the new junior and senior high school building in southwest Sidney during an Open House Sunday from 1 to 4 pm. Guides will lead visitors through eight classrooms two science labs an auditorium seating 395 a library cafe and chapel with two confessionals and stage altar access. Classes move in gradually with Oct 12 first full day. Oct 6 to 9 will see students visiting by class and moving equipment after a teachers convention.
Cheyenne County 4-H clubs earned state bids in land and stubble mulch judging at Chappell district competition. Box Butte won first in stubble mulch and third in land. Kimball placed second in land and third in stubble. 112 contestants entered. top individuals included Kent Brauer and Roland Rexroth in stubble mulch, plus Rexroth, Resroth, Brauer, and Linton advancing in land judging.
Ten University of Nebraska juniors in law will participate in writing and publishing the Nebraska Law Review, a scholarly journal of the College of Law. The invitation honors Tom Allington and eight Lincoln residents among others, with editor Jerry Hoffman guiding issues featuring legislative commentary and national criminal justice topics.
Dr Don Gerner of Kimball was elected president of the West District Dental Society at the annual meeting in Sidney last weekend succeeding Dr H C Q Nelson of Sidney. Other new officers include Dr B L Gainsforth Ogallala president elect Dr W F O Rourke Scottsbluff secretary treasurer and Dr Floyd Heimbach Alliance reporter. The convention headquarters were at the Fort Sidney Motor Hotel. The 1965 convention will be a fall event in Kimball.
Sidney city council met briefly to discuss future zoning needs when I-80 arrives. Officials, with county commissioners, may set joint rules to curb unsightly roadside development and protect town growth. Construction is four to five years away, with talks focusing on keeping the highway close to town and aiding local business.
At a Monday meeting the council backed establishing a city county airport zoning board for the planned enlargement of Sidney Municipal Airport. The county commissioners have jurisdiction since the airport lies outside city limits, and indicated willingness to proceed when needed, likely not for at least two years. The action informed the Federal Aeronautics Authority that city and county are in agreement and will act together if necessary.
City council approves a more powerful emergency siren for civil defense and fire alarms. Cost to be shared equally by the city and Civil Defense organization, and installation planned on the municipal building. The current fire siren sits atop the Elks Building in downtown Sidney.
Four building permits were approved totaling 41645 dollars at the meeting. One permit covers rebuilding the Sinclair Refining Co. station at the corner of 12th Street and Illinois Street.
More than 700 cattle passed through the Sidney Livestock Sales Pavilion ring last Saturday with yearlings at 750 pounds selling for 21.40, steel calves at 25, and heifer calves up to 23. The pavilion recently bought its property from Charles N. Deaver, signaling growth as an expanding livestock market drawing eastern buyers. Demand remains firm with upcoming sales and ample supply anticipated.
The President's Commission on the Assassination of President Kennedy releases copies of the Warren Report. Availability begins around October 1 at the U S Department of Commerce Field Office in the Majestic Building, Cheyenne Wyoming. Paper copies cost $2.50 and cloth bound hard copies $3.25. Hard bound editions feature the full title and Presidential Seal in gold on the cover.
John Underdown of Sidney has been named a District 3 director of the Nebraska Inventors Association. The group formed last Saturday at Hastings to provide educational programs seeking public recognition for inventors and to stimulate industry. Marvin Kerr of Hastings is president.
Construction in Sidney will bring a Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co structure at 12th and Hickory by C A Story and E O Ladine on a lease for occupancy after year start. Sinclair Refining Co widens service with a modern center at 12th and Illinois, while Continental Oil plans a station rebuild. Conoco may seek extra property as several downtown projects expand tax base and dress up the district.
Army approves use of Sioux Army Depot buildings and equipment for a Federal Manpower Retraining Act program aimed at reemploying workers displaced by automation. Sidney potential site under federal review. if approved, a 48 week initial course may serve up to 350 students with faculty payroll over 100000 dollars annually.
Group Six Bankers from Cheyenne County will hold their annual meeting in Alliance on Tuesday Oct 6 at the Elks Club. N T Tiemann Neb Bankers Assoc and Commercial State Bank Wausa president will speak in the afternoon. Dick Jackman will address the evening banquet. Donald Lichty serves as group president.
Nebraska Railway Commission will hold a hearing at the Cheyenne County Courthouse on October 27 to consider Alvin E. and Ellamay Hedges seeking to take over City Cab from current operator Joe I. Dodds. The action covers proposed transfer of operating authority in Sidney.
Chamber of Commerce retail committee discussed fall promotions with a Dollar Days sale set for October 15 to 17 featuring prizes. A November Night Owl sale on November 17 was proposed with clerks in nightwear and costume prizes. Christmas plans include no new decorations due to costs, with lighting at the 13th Avenue underpass moved to Illinois Street and a 1965 Christmas lights budget to be requested.
