Beet Harvest Set to Start October 7 in Ovid District
OVID COLO October 7 The sugar beet harvest is expected to begin at all receiving stations in the Ovid factory district on Thursday October 7 according to factory manager I L Johnson. Beets will be loaded into railroad cars October 7 and 8 with stockpiling beginning October 9. Growers may deliver up to 5 1/2 percent of their estimated tonnage daily through October 23 as the campaign aims to run shorter than previous years. Over 14 100 acres are expected to be harvested with an average of 15 1/2 tons per acre. A second pre harvest sampling on October 24 showed good stands averaging over 100 beets per 100 feet of row but slightly below average weight and sugar content. The crop color foliage and soil moisture are favorable and Johnson notes potential gains if warm growing temperatures continue.
