Great Pumpkin alive in Sidney grows citywide tale

Lisa Baumbach an eight year old in Sidney nurtured a pumpkin seed from Sunday school into a 92 pound Great Pumpkin that sprawled through her garden and into the alley. She plans to carve it into a jack o lantern with help from her father and looks forward to pumpkin pie after Halloween.

United Fund drives to homes in Sidney for juvenile appeal

The residential drive for Sidney United Fund Appeal starts Sunday afternoon with Sid ney High School sororities Sub-Delts and Seventeens and senior Girl Scouts visiting homes. Diane Cook and Shirley Flohr lead the campaign. a business drive begun Monday headed by Don Christians targets a goal of 16 750 dollars, about 2 50 per Sidney resident.

Commission urges reconsideration of WNTC cosmetology program

The Nebraska Coordinating Commission for Postsecondary Education asked Western Technical Community College to drop its new cosmetology course, saying demand is not demonstrated and costs are prohibitive. WNTC President Dr Charles D Michael was unavailable for comment. Board member Gene Lienemann of Sidney defended continuing, noting interest and lease-funded equipment costs. The program plans a January start, despite opposition from some private cosmetology groups and the commission’s stance.

Pet Rock Race Set for Sidney Oktoberfest Fun

Sidney area youngsters will train a pet rock for a race at Legion Park during Oktoberfest opening next week. The Jaycees sponsor games including the pet rock race, bicycle races and a bean bag contest. Lodgepole folks selling ice cream raise funds for a swimming pool as three day events feature continuous entertainment from 2 p.m. to midnight Saturday and Friday shows start at 4 p.m. with a 7 to 10 p.m. football game between Sidney High and Scottsbluff. Jeff Bush’s polka band and old-time fiddlers will perform after the game.

Inservice Day Set for 300 Educators Across Four Counties

Educators from Cheyenne Devel Garden and Kimball Counties will attend an inservice day at St. Patrick’s High School Sidney sponsored by Educational Service Unit 14. Topics include teachers legal duties reading for the learning disabled child learning centers and classroom management approaches. ESU 14 administrator Bill Kelley expects about 300 participants.
