Pioneer John Fischer's homestead story and lessons

The article recalls early settlement life and contrasts barren pioneer hardships with modern comforts. It follows John P. Fischer who arrived March 3, 1885, homesteaded seven miles south of Sidney, built stock and grain, expanded to six daughters and a son, and kept meticulous books to show that better farming on smaller areas yields profit.

Sidney High School and the community’s education vow

The Sidney article extols local schools as a climate for settler success. It highlights a white stone high school with a 900-student enrollment, twelve grades, twelve teachers, and top-town salaries. It argues for practical training, manual and domestic studies, music, athletics, and a culture of literature and public-minded youth. Local pride centers on “The Championship School” status in debates, oratory, and sports.

What a Former Dakota Farmer Has Done Here

L P Houge moved to Cheyenne County Nebraska three years ago and built a thriving farm. He started with a half section and a gasoline breaking outfit, taught neighbors, and expanded to 1,130 acres for himself. He shipped thousands of bushels of flax and wheat, bought adjoining land, and purchased a larger breaking outfit. He recently returned from Wyoming with 640 sheep to finish on corn.
