Weather report hints at an upcoming frost despite recent rains that improved fall crops. Forecasters warn of near freezing temperatures around Tuesday night, urging readers to prepare by airing blankets, stocking coal, and inspecting chimneys and pipes.
Abram Eckert of Lebanon Indiana and John Wolford of Arcola with Jacob Eckert relatives joined a fishing trip and picnic dinner at old Colton. John Eckert drove the group including John Cawley and Dave Eckert. The expedition yielded many fish and a day they plan to repeat at the first opportunity.
The National Cafe opened Tuesday quietly and served a noonday lunch to a good crowd. Patrons testified their willingness to give it a trial, and if future meals are as good and deftly served they will have no trouble securing patronage.
Judge A. S. Sutton, Republican gubernatorial candidate, will speak in Sidney next Sunday, September 19, addressing residents and nearby communities in the evening. He has impressed audiences and earned respectful mentions from opposing papers, with earnest reasoning winning over some critics.
A horrific coal oil accident Tuesday left Martha Ullery with burns from head to foot. Neighbors hurried to help as she screamed in flames, dying sixteen hours later after intense suffering. Her mother warned against using coal oil before the blast blew out the ashpan and saturated her clothing.
Roy M. Scott of Omaha prepares to open The Sidney Rooming House in the Sidney Mercantile building by October 1. The second story hotel will offer twenty one sleeping rooms with hot and cold water and telephone, city heat plus a backup furnace, a south entrance, a broad lobby, and an office. Upon completion, the corner will house thirty four rooms. Scott plans to relocate his family to the new hotel.
Affected widows in Sidney celebrate Congress passage of a pension bill raising pensions for soldiers' widows over seventy from twelve to twenty dollars monthly. It also grants twelve dollars monthly to widows previously excluded due to late marriage, providing added support in retirement. The act reflects wartime gratitude by the government toward defenders and their dependents.

Will H. L. Myers, living west of Peetz, was instantly killed when his traction plow’s fly wheel caught his heavy coat. He was forty one in two days, leaving a wife and six children. Funeral services were held at Peetz United Brethren church and burial moved to York Nebraska. Neighbors rallied to aid the family.

The Sidney Mercantile Company hosted a free dance last Thursday in their new building attracting a large crowd from a forty mile radius. The 65 by 80 foot floor hosted over a hundred couples with an orchestra in a center platform and a full crew of local dance partners. Participants included Jim Davis Ed Bohn L W Vath G D VanGorder L A Bartholomew A Sittler and Miss Dorothy Hart. Guests Mr and Mrs Frank Rowan visited with children Margery in high school and Harold recently graduating who planned to move to Lincoln for university studies.
William Mickley proprietor of the Vienna restaurant came back Saturday after attending his mother’s funeral in the eastern part of the state.
County commissioners meet at Sidney Nebraska on September 6 1916 to review minutes and the state examiner report on Simon Fishman county treasurer. The long accounting shows receipts and disbursements and lists precinct members for jury draw plus adjournment to October 3 1916.
A camping party arrives near Bronson, intends a week to ten days of outdoor living and small construction on land owned by a group member.
