Slavery of Indian Captives Under Puritan Massachusetts
In early Massachusetts wars Indian captives were divided for households and bought as servants. Reverend Peter Thatcher bought an Indian girl in 1673 for five pounds down and five later, documented as a high priced servant. He later beat the girl for nearly harming his child, a brutal diary note. The Puritans sold Indian captives to the West Indies, including King Philip's wife and child. Edward Everett later criticized this history in sharp terms.
