Sidney reports a high enrollment as the new senior high opens. 246 students entered the new senior high for 1931 1932 with 62 seniors and 72 freshmen, promising the biggest graduating class and strong overall attendance as staff adjust to the modern building and expanded library, study rooms, and facilities.
Preparation of an oil map showing Wil Logan county structures and leases is authorized after a Sterling chamber conference with F. O. Bollman. Oil men from Texas and Oklahoma head to Colorado, spurring exploration to test new fields. The Ida Johnson well north of Orchard renews interest, with Willard and Greasewood fields noted.
Mrs Lena Taylor mother of Mr Sam Fine of Sidney died suddenly of a heart attack Monday evening in Denver. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at Mt Nebo cemetery burial followed. She would have been 76 next Wednesday and had lived with the Fines while visiting. Born in Skanville, Russia, she came to this country years ago mother of four sons and one daughter. Her sons had preceded her in death. Mr and Mrs Fine and daughter Stetchen were in Denver at the time. Widely known in Sidney and Cheyenne county, her death drew many condolences.
Police report counterfeit silver dollars and a doctored five dollar bill circulated over the past two days in West Nebraska. A Mitchell shopper passed a forged five, a clerk pursued a suspect to Scottsbluff where arrest was made but the man could not be identified. Authorities note five counterfeit dollars since Saturday evening and crude pewter coins described.
County commissioners granted permits to the Cheyenne county fair board and the Union Pacific athletic club to operate dance halls. The fair board runs a pavilion at the county fair grounds and the Wal Bur hall is run by the athletic club east of Sidney. The votes were A llington and Weikhorst yes, Shaw no.
Old timers in the western Nebraska region plan their annual reunion next Monday in Lodge Pole. Several hundred visitors are expected. The program centers on pioneer reminiscences with an old timers parade at 1 PM led by Bert Bates. Lodge Pole and Chappell baseball teams headline the sports portion.
George E. Taylor, vice president and lifelong director of the American National Bank, retires at 69 after 42 years of service. Born in Newton Iowa, he came to Sidney from Loup City, led the bank since 1914, and leaves well regarded for his quiet, patient service and tenure.
Seventeen divorce cases appear on the Cheyenne County district court docket for the equity term to be heard by Judge J. L. Tewell in Sidney. The court convenes Monday, September 7. Nearly half of the suits are filed by husbands, with eight actions husband against wife. Charges vary from non-support to other marital disputes.
Raymond Cruise recorded the full cost of producing 2,800 bushels of wheat on 240 acres at $871, or 46 cents per bushel. One third of the crop rent left 1,870 bushels to cover expenses. without rent the cost is 31 cents per bushel. Costs include fuel, seed, depreciation, and labor. In Sidney, George Null, 18, was crushed by a large clamshell derrick at the rip track, suffering multiple injuries but survived the ambulance trip to Cheyenne.
The eight day exposition begins today at the Nebraska state fair grounds with expectations of a record attendance near half a million. Cheyenne county 4-H entrants, led by Walter Miller and Rosetta Siemers, travel to the fair, aiming for top judging honors and a chance at a Chicago trip. A new $125,000 4-H club building hosts activities, while the fair drops the circus for new grandstand attractions and fireworks nightly.
Ruth Karvanek became the bride of John Frederick Larison at Trinity Lutheran Church in Chadron Thursday afternoon. The ceremony, officiated by Rev. W. T. Eahse, featured Eleanor Rose singing Oh Promise Me and Truly I Do, with the wedding march performed by Mrs. Percy Dimick as palm and white blossom decor lit the setting.
Lawrence Fortrey former manager of Brown Central Shoe store leaves this weekend for South Bend Indiana to enroll at Notre Dame University. He plans a course in law. He is a Sidney high school graduate and a former student at St Patrick's academy.
The Bunker Hill nine won 11 to 9 over Lorenzo last Sunday after a late Lorenzo rally. The Telegraph News had misreported the outcome. Bunker Hill led early before Lorenzo closed the gap to seal the win.
With the 1931 season two weeks away, Coach Leo Black held light workouts for 45 players as he plans a larger squad for heavier drills. He has not announced the first string lineup for a potential third Western Nebraska title, though size is certain.
WN W Vannice of York becomes the new manager of Brown's Central Shoe store, arriving Wednesday to succeed Lawrence Portrey who is leaving Sidney this week. Vannice is an experienced shoe man and comes highly recommended by the Central Shoe company. He is married.
A PTA reception for school teachers is set for this evening in the junior high school gym. A good program has been arranged and parents are invited to attend.
Potter sits atop the Cheyenne county league with Lodge Pole and Dalton in a tight chase as final Sunday games loom. Potter faces Bunker Hill at Bronson while Lodge Pole meets Dalton in a key duel. Gurley, Sunol, Sidney, Lorenzo, and others finish the slate with title and fair tourney implications. Myron Hornby is expected to pitch in the season finale.
Motorcycle races and stunt events will be held at the fair grounds track Sunday at 2 p m. The meet is sponsored by Reuben Crock of Pine Bluffs, a former resident of the city. The program includes races relays a spectacular fence crash with seasoned drivers entered and fast times expected.
Stage manager Hamilton announces the New York theatre guild company will present Lula Vollmer’s Sun Up at the Fox Theatre in Sidney next Wednesday. The play, told in 318 distinct words, portrays nine characters as individual types. Olga Cosgriff stars in the principal role.
The weekly grain market review notes Chicago wheat futures slipped to a new low for the week ending August 28 amid light exports and ample domestic supplies. Russian competition kept prices under pressure, while oats and barley held firm. Export sales remained weak, with North American wheat totaling about 2.5 million bushels. Harvest across the Northern Hemisphere progresses with widespread field work in Canada and the U.S. grain belt.
