Green Rye and Cowpeas Affect Milk Flavor in Cattle Feeds

Tests by the U S Department of Agriculture show feeding green rye or green cowpeas to dairy cows alters milk flavor and odor. Consuming up to 15 pounds an hour before milking causes only slight changes. 30 pounds before milking increases them modestly. After milking, both feeds have little effect. Green cowpeas produce stronger odor changes than rye. To avoid off flavors, limit to 15 pounds before milking. both can be fed after milking with minimal impact. Also notes on local happenings include births, visits, sales, and social events in the community.
