Legion Auxiliary District Officers Plan Veterans Day Program
The American Legion and Auxiliary held their Officers Visitation dinner in the Legion Hall. Dist 3 Commander Jack Stephens and Keith Tanner of Sterling presided. Dorys Fehringer and Helen Hall received 10 and 20 year membership pins. Members and guests, including Mrs. Tanner and Les Harris, attended. The group organized a Veterans Day program at Peetz School for November 11 and prepared gift drives for Nicaragua children and a Christmas Gift Shop.

Social Security Pay Hike Given Martin Approval
President Nixon sent a second message to Congress proposing a 10 percent Social Security benefits increase to offset rising prices. If enacted it would take effect March 1, 1970, while other bills seek January 1, 1970. The proposal also suggests raising the maximum earnings base from 7800 to 9000 dollars, with Ways and Means hearings already underway. Twenty five million Americans receive benefits, and workers would bear the higher cost of the boost. The item notes multiple possible increases and ongoing debate in Congress.

VA Checks Go Out To Nebraska Veterans Widows And Orphans
About 33 000 Nebraska veterans widows and orphans receive monthly VA benefit payments. Over 18 000 claimants will get a questionnaire with their November 1 1969 check. Return by January 15 1970 or January payment will be delayed. Cheyenne County Service Officer Leo M Gorman offers help completing the form. Office hours 10 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday in the Court House.

Chadron State seniors begin student teaching across 26 districts
A total of 113 Chadron State College seniors will start student teaching in 26 area school systems on Monday November 3 under Dr. Harold Koch chair of Education. They will teach until January 9 then return to campus before the end of the first semester.
