Democrat Don McGinley told about 120 at a Sidney breakfast rally that Benson farm policies threaten farmers by draining resources and risking bankruptcy. He warned wheat and corn programs would create surpluses and government ownership, urging opposition and noting the fall referendum as pivotal.
Sidney Rotary Club schedules Farmers Night at the Sidney Country Club with dinner at 6 15. Each Rotarian to invite farmer friends for an evening honoring local farmers. Headline speaker Dr Marvai Baker will discuss An American View of Turkey and Turkey's modernizing agriculture and its regional role.
Twenty nine Protestant churches in Lodge Pole Valley will begin a five week series this Sunday October 26 with each church preacher delivering own text on The Authority of Scripture Justified By Faith Alone Priesthood of All Believers Christian Freedom and Sanctity of Common Life A mass rally titled Festival of Faith will close the series on November 23 in Sidney A mass choir from cooperating churches will perform under Dr Gustave Ferre Dean of Corner School of Religion The participating churches span Bushnell Kimball Dix Sidney Gurley Peetz Lodgepole and Chappell with diverse denominations including Methodist Presbyterian Lutheran Baptist and Episcopal bodies.
A Thursday morning incident on Sth Ave caused $200 damage to a car driven by Charlotte Phillipps and $75 damage to a parked car owned by C. Glenn Jones. Police reported the right rear fender of Phillipps’s vehicle struck Jones’s door.
Weather report notes Thursday in Sidney reached 67 degrees with calm winds and pleasant conditions. McCook recorded 70 and Scottsbluff 69, Chadron and Alliance also at 67. Forecast shows little change into Friday and Saturday with increasing high clouds and 60s by day and 25 to 35 at night for the next five days.
The Sidney Chamber of Commerce counts 7500 to 10000 visitors in 1958, hosting four conventions and Shopportunity Days. A December 8 vote will decide whether to disband, while officials urge new ideas and continued local business involvement.
In southwestern Morrill County the No 1 Stark discovery by Nebraska Drillers Inc and Mar Oil Co recovered 2200 feet of oil and 100 feet of mud water in a J sand drill stem test. The well shows about six and a half feet of pay sand near the Enders field, dominating western Nebraska activity this week.
Two persons were hospitalized after a two car crash at Highway 30 and Potter Main Street on Wednesday. William Patrick Hourigan and his wife, both in good condition at Cheyenne County Memorial Hospital, suffered chest and arm injuries and a cut lip. Ray Wills, bruised and shaken, declined medical attention. State Trooper Roy Anderson said Wills was eastbound and tried to turn left into the collision with Hourigan’s car. Damages were estimated at $1,000 per vehicle.
Beatrice was chosen as the 1959 site for the Nebraska State Wheat Show after an executive session of the Nebraska Grain Improvement Assn. directors. Scotts Bluff and North Platte had submitted invitations, and the board noted the 1958 show was in the west and emphasized a state wide rotation to benefit more growers.
Sidney residents escaped injury in a two car collision at Gurley late Wednesday afternoon. Donna L. Ewert stopped in traffic when Ronald L. Engelland collided with her rear. Engelland’s car suffered about $130 damage. no damage to Ewert’s car.
Diane Lee Russell 19 of Hubbell Nebraska was crowned 1958 Nebraska Wheat Queen after serving as a wheat princess last year. She is a junior in the University of Nebraska College of Agriculture, daughter of Dean and Mrs. Russell, sponsored by the Chester Community Club.
The Colorado Buffaloes host Nebraska in Boulder as a regional game on Channel 4 at 2 p.m. KSID will also carry the contest. Colorado, undefeated in four games, is a heavy favorite with strong rushing and pass defense. Nebraska has a weak offense, entering with two wins and three losses after a 38-4 loss to Syracuse.
The 1958 Nebraska State Wheat Show featured 350 samples and 750 attendees, both not records but considered strong. Champions were John L. Matejka of Ohiowa with a 63.0 Bison sample, and Fred Schmidt and Sons of Bartley with a rival 63 lb bushel, as Rolland R. Roberts of Bayard won the Sweepstakes Division.

Cheyenne samples showed 63.5 and 64 pounds per bushel, Nebred 61.0 pounds. In the western region Byrle R. Hopkins of Harrisburg, also farming in Banner County, earned top honors.
Sidney volunteer firefighters answered a string of alarms Thursday and a silent call Friday morning. Four fires were reported including a grass fire at 10:04 a.m. near Mth and Grant and a weed blaze at 12:15 p.m. on King Street. A grass fire at 2:38 p.m. on Maple and a car fire at 5:38 p.m. on Solano Drive followed. Early Friday Harvey Vizina responded to a silent call on 10th Ave where a car owned by Dick Baldwin had front seat damage.
Panhandle Players present the three act comedy Arsenic and Old Lace by Joseph Kesselring at the High School auditorium opening Monday night at 8 15. Two performances run through Tuesday with tickets at the door or via Elwell Motors Western Auto Store or mail Box 593. Season tickets for three performances cost 3 for adults and 150 for students. one performance tickets are 150 for adults and 75 cents for students.
