District Court Opens One Day Term Under Judge Grimes

Judge N H M Grimes with stenographer Miss Bratt of North Platte accelerated the October term, finishing the docket in a day. Several cases continued. two jury cases carried to next term, likely February. Many rulings include continued actions, overruled motions, and several decrees for plaintiffs.

Prairie Fire Destroys Rangeland Near Higgins

A noon Friday prairie fire swept from Jack Willis ranch ten miles northwest of Higgins. It destroyed thirty five tons of hay on Andy Ladine’s place and wiped out Henry Bartling’s range and fences. Two bands of sheep driven from Baker City, Oregon to Omaha Neb were under L A Carten of Chicago. A warrant was issued against W Wiley’s outfit for alleged carelessness but Justice McFadden ruled the fire origin and cause could not be proven.

North Platte mourns Guy A Laing a pioneer figure born April 8 1852 in Kalamazoo Michigan He helped develop western Nebraska earning respect from frontiersman W F Cody Laing chaired cattle and horse ventures in Lincoln and Cheyenne counties and later ran a liquor business he joined the Catholic church before his death October 12 1898 leaving a wife Sarah D Behbon and son Gordon with substantial estate including a 1900 acre ranch and a 5000 insurance policy.
