Record of a Nebraska Wheat Show program held in Sidney with morning and afternoon sessions. Speakers included Dr Rosalind Morris and Earl F Cross with topics on wheat research and exports. Events feature Wheat Queen candidates, awards, and a Coronation set for 9 10 p m.
Reddewig heads the association of 41 major railroads in 24 states west and south of Chicago. Other speakers include Loren W. Johnson of Continental Grain Co., Earl Cross of Denver Milling and Elevator Co., and Dr. Rosalind Morris of the University of Nebraska.
The 10th annual Wheat Show at Sidney city auditorium on October 23 features a junior grain grading contest, a hair styling demonstration, and talks by industry leaders. Clair M. Roddewig will deliver the keynote on Agriculture and Transportation, with awards and the coronation of the Nebraska Wheat Queen to close the evening.
Absentee ballot requests for the general election on November 4 are fewer than a dozen, per County Clerk I. L. Pindell. Ballots may be picked up or mailed until November 1, with disabled voter ballots available Oct 25 to Nov 3. Ballots are due back the Friday before the election.
The Nebraska Citizens Council reports Sidney has the fourth highest total tax levy among twenty large communities at 79 mills, with school taxes making up more than half. Levs rise in most cities. Kimball shows an 83 percent school tax hike to fund enrollment growth.
Twila Larson was selected homecoming queen with Rosalin Campbell and Donna Ewert as attendants. Lyle Peters was crowned king of the athletics during the Gurley celebration despite a dampened football game atmosphere.
Twenty dollars in damage was reported Saturday in a two car mishap involving a parked car. Sidney police said Norma J. Wester driving south on 33th Avenue at about 6 12 p.m. struck a parked station wagon owned by Paul J. Sullivan. Wester vehicle moved several feet from point of impact. No damage to Sullivan car.
A fast moving cold front swept into western Nebraska with gusts up to 63 mph in the Sidney area. About 150 telephones were out of service and a two vehicle accident occurred as crews worked to repair downed lines. The storm also caused an awning to tear away at Sears and street lights to fail. The cold front brought snow to Montana and is expected to ease with cooler temperatures and highs around 60s later this week.
The 89 year old South America resident George L. Fawcett left a $5,000 gift to Memorial Hospital in Sidney and $2,000 to Miller Memorial Hospital in Chappell. He also bequeathed $2,000 to Dunstan's Institution for the Blind in London and $10,000 to Hector A. Vega of Argentina. Directors will decide how the Memorial Hospital gift is used. No strings attached, says attorney Paul L. Martin.
The United Fund campaign gained momentum over the weekend with business district workers adding about two thousand dollars, bringing the total to 4,460 this morning. The residential drive was postponed for one week to allow the other three phases to finish, while advance gifts and SOD drive reports move the campaign toward its 13,500 goal.
A two car crash Saturday evening on 10th Ave in front of Panhandle Drug Store caused 40 injury damage to Adolph B. Fastenau of Gurley. Dick L. Smith age 11 of Sidney struck Fastenau from behind as he slowed to park. Smith left skid marks of 42 feet.
Sidney directors voted five to two to disband the Chamber by January 1 1959 citing non participation by business people. With 191 of 400 business houses in the chamber this year the plan will be presented to the membership at the December quarterly meeting where officers are elected and no membership drive will be held.
Eighteen new oil locations were staked in Nebraska over the weekend, led by Kimball County. The list includes Forsling No. 1 in Kimball, Pinkerton No. 3, and several fields across Banner, Kimball, and Morrill counties, with multiple wildcat and field-designated sites such as Lewis, Gehrke, Willson, Fernquest, and Wilson Ranch Fields.
Don McGinley the Democratic candidate for Congress from Ogalala will address a breakfast rally Thursday at 8 30 a m at the Fort Sidney Hotel. The event highlights McGinley as featured speaker for the morning gathering.
A capacity crowd of 350 attended the Oil Progress dinner in Casper Wyoming at St Patrick s Youth Center. Neal Atkins Casper Chamber president led the program and announced a $7909.28 disbursement total with $2251.85 remaining. He outlined four year end priorities including the wheat show membership drive window display and elections. An expected 1500 people were to attend Sidney s wheat show with 300 wheat samples and a beauty contest with nine entrants.
A cooperative safety campaign with Gov. Victor E. Anderson and the Nebraska Traffic Safety Foundation will distribute fluorescent spacers through Sidney Jaycees and 59 other chapters. The stickers, about three and a half by six and a half inches, alert drivers to 200, 150, and 75 feet from the car ahead and cost 50 cents each.
