Private Lee M Bayliff of Gordon Nebraska died October 10 1918 at Fort Riley Kansas from bronchial pneumonia while serving his country His death brought his young wife Marlissa Gilbert and his parents to mourn with a sister and two brothers all residents of Sidney The funeral on the courthouse lawn drew a large crowd with the Home Guard flag draped casket and a solemn procession to Dunkard Cemetery where three rifle volleys taps and a bugle marked the tribute to the fallen soldier

Mrs Leona Driscol composer of When Oh Glory Floats Over The Rhine and Miss Pay Reed of Omaha worked in Sidney last week to raise funds for the Omaha Daily News Tobacco Fund. They sold the song at ten cents a copy and sent proceeds to the fund for the boys in France. Driscol could not sing due to illness from influenza but Reed sold several copies and turned over 164 to The Telegraph for transmission to the Omaha News. The song has not been sung publicly here yet but testers praised its beauty.
