Forage Crops Cut Dairy Costs and Boost Profits
The National Plant Food Institute notes that using forage crops to supply 60 to 75 percent of cows nutrient needs lowers milk production costs and raises profits. Purdue agronomist G A Williams reports average milk yield of 10 930 pounds per cow with 6 000 pounds of hay equivalent annual consumption and estimates roughages cost about half per ton of digestible nutrients versus concentrates. High quality pasture, hay, or silage plus soil fertilization and regular maintenance keep yields up and costs down.
