Gas rates to rise in 153 Nebraska communities

Kansas Nebraska Natural Gas Co filed notice of new residential and commercial rates across 153 Nebraska communities. In Sidney Kimball Potter Dalton and Gurley the increase is 43 cents per thousand cubic feet, adding about 60 cents monthly to the average bill. The rates take effect December 1.

Labor demand remains high in Cheyenne and neighboring counties

Labor demand stayed strong in Cheyenne, Devel, and Kimball counties through September with no decline. Chester Hickman, manager of the local employment office, noted construction placements led at about 40 percent, transportation jobs at 25 percent, and 35 percent in service, farming, and related work. Eleven veterans found placements, six from the Vietnam era.

Pleasant Autumn Weather Takes Hold Across Nebraska

A high pressure system over Nebraska, South Dakota, and Minnesota keeps Nebraska in mild autumn conditions. Lows tonight expected in the 40s, with increasing clouds Thursday and highs in the lower to mid 80s. Norfolk and Valentine tied for the state low at 33 degrees, while Lincoln posted a Tuesday high of 85 degrees.

Sidney volunteers keep community safer through firefighting

Sidney's 43 volunteer firemen answer calls at all hours to battle mattress and car fires and respond to false alarms. They train monthly, log over 1000 hours yearly, and many are Emergency Medical Technicians. The department covers Sidney Cheyenne County and nearby rural districts with three full time members and a large volunteer force.

United Fund Reaches Sixty Six Percent in Sidney Drive

The Sidney United Fund reports 66 percent of its goal, totaling $8,580. Major gifts include a $5 contribution from Sidney Federal Savings and Loan and its employer, presented to drive Chairman Ed Cole by James Payne, and a $360 hospital employee gift from Memorial Hospital. House to house drives and earlier advance gifts continue. Funds will be distributed to 10 local charities.

Cheyenne County Historical Association names new director and officers

The Cheyenne County Historical Association held a meeting in which Pepper Cooper was named Sidney representative on the board, Ella Mae Goranson became vice president, replacing Nancy McMillen, and Frank Partsch joined the renovation committee for the officers' building. The group grapples with contractor Bowman's contract exit, material shortages, and a federal authenticity requirement for horsehair plaster. A mobile museum visit to Sidney is planned for Oct 19 with I-80 dedication ceremonies, plus potential repairs to a Legion Park steam locomotive and notes on the Dalton log cabin project funding and donation.
