United Fund reaches 15 percent of goal in Sidney drive

The Sidney United Fund has reached 15 percent of its $15 000 goal with 2183 in contributions. A kickoff meeting for the business drive is set for Tuesday at 7 pm in the Cheyenne County Chamber of Commerce office, drive headquarters.

Oktoberfest profits spark debate at Sidney Chamber

Last weekend's Oktoberfest drew about $8,800 in revenue from beer food booths and flea market sales against roughly $6,800 in expenses. Ed Cole said about $2,000 would remain after bills, while Mary Evans said beer and German food profits were handled as a single category. Directors voted to allocate 25 percent of profits to the Oktoberfest fund and move the rest to the operating budget, amid debate over profit classification and chamber financial solvency.

Classroom Update draws 500 teachers to Sidney event

About 500 elementary and secondary teachers from 18 Southern Panhandle schools attend the in service at Sidney Junior and Senior High Schools. State Education Commissioner Dr Anne Campbell leads a delegation of nearly 40 department specialists guiding nearly 100 sessions and staff conferences. Educational Service Unit 14 sponsors the event with topics ranging from new developments in education to classroom method evaluations.

Ford seeks Congress for airline deregulation plan

Soil judging contest draws more than 120 contestants

More than 120 contestants from the Panhandle gathered in Chappell for the West Area Land and Stubble Mulch Judging Contest. Fut ure Farmers of America teams from Alliance Bayard Bridgeport Chappell Harrison Hemingford Kimball and Scottsbluff competed for state-qualifying spots. Top individuals included Day Ray Hemingford Tim Deboodt Kimball Kevin Kerry Chappell Ted Kelmer Kimball and Bill Reichman Chappell. State-qualifying teams were Kimball No 2 Chappell No 1 Hemingford. The land judging was on Gail Klingman farm and the stubble mulch on Dale Bruns farm with sponsors South Platte Natural Resources District Devel County Extension Service and Soil Conservation service.

NRD backs study before ETSI coal slurry pipeline

The South Platte NRD approved 8-1 a Ron Cacek drafted resolution urging three Panhandle NRDs to oppose ETSI authority to build a coal slurry pipeline until independent analysis shows effects on water, resources, and environment. The measure aims for case by case consideration and local comment before legislature action.

Night patrol grant to Cheyenne County deputy

The Nebraska Commission on Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice approved a 7932.50 grant to Cheyenne County for an additional sheriff's deputy to provide night patrol service. The award was part of 27 grants totaling 367293.97 approved at the September meeting to upgrade Nebraska's criminal justice system and reduce crime.

Cooler air forecast for Nebraska Panhandle and state

The National Weather Service predicts partly cloudy skies tonight with cooler temps. Lows range from the lower 30s in the west to the upper 40s in the extreme southeast, with Thursday highs in the upper 60s to low 70s statewide as a cold front moves southeast from a southwest South Dakota low. The low center moves into southern Canada by Thursday morning, bringing cooler conditions to Nebraska, where Tuesday’s high reached 91 in the state and North Platte logged a 45 degree low.
