Nebraska Works Progress Admin announces $11 147 allotted for grading 36 miles of farm to market secondary roads in Cheyenne County. The county project will employ about 27 men for nine months and is the first major WPA project approved there. Earlier small jobs were tentatively approved but not funded.
William Sharman, a former resident of Cheyenne county, died recently at his home in Silverton Oregon. He and his wife left Sidney in 1935 for the west coast due to his health. A native of England he came to the United States at 25 and farmed in Seward county before moving to the county in 1911. He and his wife farmed here until eight years ago. He is survived by his wife and four children W T Sharman and Mrs L P Houge of Sidney, Mrs L A Hookham of Neligh, and R H Sharman of Costa Mesa California.
District Engineer John McMeekin predicts the 22 mile stretch of concrete on the Lincoln highway west of North Platte will open to traffic by November 1. Two miles of pavement adjacent to the concrete west of North Platte will be opened this week, offering tourists a hard surfaced highway entirely across Nebraska.
Clare Greenwood, a call boy for the Union Pacific railroad, and Agnes Loos of Parkston, were married at the bride’s home on September 19. The couple honeymooned on the west coast. Greenwood returned to Sidney while the bride stayed briefly before joining him. They will reside at the Hardy apartments in Sidney.
Fighters training at Bob O Brien's camp along with amateurs will stage a boxing show at Wal Bur hall Sunday afternoon from 2 to 5 o clock. Several boxers will wind up training for the legion card Monday night. A small admission charge will cover expenses.
Rail traffic increases with more trains and resumed pay rolls. Old workers return while new hires fill gaps as rail business improves, signaling a broader upturn in the country’s economy. Sidney benefits from rail income as the revival continues across the industry.
Governor Cochran orders W B Banning to stop issuing crop reports and rejects any duplication of reports. He states reports must come from hotel, gasoline, and food inspectors only if they have time and knowledge for the work. He says the remedy is to fix methods within an existing agency, not create a new one, and warns against official duplication of effort and expense. The reference agency is A E Anderson's work.
State Land Commissioner Swan son told 2,000 to 2,500 delinquent state school land lease holders they can save a dollar by paying promptly. Notices of delinquency will be mailed between October 10 and 15 to those in arrears for the first half of 1935 or previously delinquent. He noted the legislature raised delinquent notice fees from 50 cents to $1.
The intra club golf tourney at Sidney Country Club moves to the second round. Championship flight pairings include Simo Dynes vs Zalesky and Babcock vs W. Thomas, Bauman vs G H Doran, and Guy Doran against Smith. Consolation matches list R Thomas vs Hink Lasseter vs Tompkins Raper vs Jorgenson Ackles vs Dirks.
WPA applications flood Alliance district office under a 2 million dollar blanket plan for 16 types of jobs. Notable requests include Cheyenne county land survey 3046 dollars and Sidney school clerical help 1178 dollars, plus projects in Dawes, Deuel, Garden, Hooker, Kimball, Bridgeport, Lyman, Sheridan, Gordon, Hay Springs and Thomas counties totaling tens of thousands in local improvements.
Governor Cochran announced a late month special session to consider a $2,000,000 social security program covering old age pensions unemployment insurance and related benefits under the national act. Attorney General Wright to draft the bill, with input from Howard Hunter of Chicago the regional FERA director. Continued on page 6 column 32.
Mrs. C S Radcliffe left for San Bernardino California Tuesday night to be with her father Dr J C Swatzlander who lies critically ill in a hospital. He has been in ill health for years and underwent an operation this week with only an even chance of recovery. Swatzlander practiced in Sidney years ago and is well known by old residents of the county. The family earlier lived in Colorado before moving to the west coast.
FERA Administrator Witte announced 23 936 persons certified as eligible for WPA work projects in Nebraska after a tour that included Grand Island North Platte and Alliance. The eligible counts by district were Norfolk 2 470 Omaha 10 644 Lincoln 5 691 Grand Island 2 195 Alliance 1 036 North Platte 0 District 6.
Sidney's football team makes its initial home appearance this afternoon at three o'clock against the Sterling Tigers. Sterling seeks revenge after a 6 to 0 loss to Julesburg while Sidney aims to improve from its 18 to 0 win over Lodge Pole as Coach Reed works in green players and possible lineup changes.
A doctor’s certificate from Montoya prompted a main event change on Monday night. Jimmy Wooten of Council Bluffs stepped in to face Showboat McQuillan after Montoya injured his arm. Wooten, who defeated Battling Nelson Tuesday, is viewed as an up and coming challenger. McQuillan, in good shape and promising a tough ten round bout, aims to prove himself against Wooten.
Nebraska farmers continue to receive large payments as 1935 corn-hog checks roll in under the AAA program. State headquarters report $5,046,869 paid in first payments across nearly every county, with total 1935 corn-hog and wheat support projected at about $22 million and $9 million in 1934 wheat payments already delivered. Cheyenne County leads 1935 corn-hog receipts with $40,283, while Sheridan County follows.
Joseph Price, 38, who said he was from Sidney, was found dead in a Sterling hotel Tuesday afternoon from apparent heart failure. An autopsy was planned though officials deemed it a natural death. Price signed the register with Sidney as his home, had visited Sterling often, staying at the same hotel. His sister Mrs James A Hall of Denver and brother Otto Price of Westplains, Mo, were named. Funeral arrangements were to be handled by Jackson mortuary with Mrs Hall expected to arrive yesterday.
The Telegraph begins a three Friday run publishing the delinquent real estate tax list. Notice by County Treasurer Louis Wasem states that on November 4 1935 the first Monday in November there will be a public sale of all land and town lots delinquent for 1934 and prior taxes. Sales continue daily until all parcels are offered to satisfy the delinquent amounts.
A Paris press release says France and England will demand punishment for Italy’s invasion of Ethiopia and present the demand to the League of Nations. The move is seen as a tentative declaration of war against Il Duce unless Italy reprimands its military actions. President Roosevelt remains strictly neutral.
County Agent J C Swinbank reports Cheyenne county held its first county wide achievement program with about 200 attendees including 4-H members, parents and friends. Sixteen clubs took part presenting music readings recitations and demonstrations. A girls dress revue featured 14 participants modeling handmade gowns. Winners Rozetta Seimers Ruby Sparks Betty Lee Lowell Florence Seimers received medals from Chicago Mail Order and ribbon trophies from a local 4-H friend. Special recognition went to leaders and prize winners with trip awards and blossoms. Continued on Page 6 Column 3.
An allotment nearing one million dollars was approved by WPA officers for Nebraska. The funds include 18 city national guard armories and a broader list across 25 counties. Local sponsors have pledged over $107,000. Projects detailed include Valentine school work, Sidney park and footbridge, and Dawes county road work with federal and sponsor shares.
Josephine Jordan of Colorado Springs wed Arthur L. Fuller of the same city in Pueblo Colo. Friends report the ceremony took place Monday. Jordan is the daughter of Mrs Lucy Jordan a former Sidney resident and attended Sidney public schools Colorado Woman's College of Denver and Colorado College affiliated with Kappa Kappa Gamma. Fuller attended Colorado College and Colorado University and is now an announcer for KVOR radio in Colorado Springs.
Grasshoppers feast on Cheyenne county wheat as infestation grows. Farmers report rapid hopper multiplication and visible field damage. Cool nights keep pests inactive. by midday they do most work. Many spread poison to halt growth.
Chief of Police Rogers received a letter from Harry Cooper, a secret operative for President Roosevelt's special train, praising local officers for crowd handling and advance safety measures during the president's appearance after dark. Flood lights, rope boundaries, and cleared tracks aided safety for about 5000 onlookers.
Western Nebraska communities may apply to the Works Progress Administration for road, street, park, and other projects. Alliance WPA approved blanket applications totaling 700 000 for farm to market roads. Counties can still submit more farm to market road requests until the blanket amount runs out. Individual road projects submitted earlier are not part of the blanket.
The World Series moves to Chicago with Detroit and Chicago tied after 2 games. Detroit won 8 to 3 yesterday to even the series, while Chicago took the opener 3 to 0. Tigers likely start Auker or Cochran. Cubs may start Lee or French with Hartnett catching. Broadcasts begin at 12:15 Sidney time.
Premium checks are available to county fair winners at Sidney Drug through E A Winter treasurer of the board. Glen Bales president announced a financial statement for the 1935 fair will be ready soon, noting the event was a success from every standpoint.
Fossils from western Nebraska are being assembled and mounted for display at the University of Nebraska museum under C. B. Schultz and his field staff. The expedition yielded numerous bones and a well preserved creodent skeleton, thought by officials to be the most complete of its kind.
Funeral services for Leslie F. Cunningham former farm leader and county official were conducted Tuesday afternoon at the Methodist church by Rev J J Sheaff. The crowded service paid final tribute with interment at Sidney Greenwood Cemetery under Rice Funeral Service supervision.
The H. B. Nelson company reported two cases of anti-freeze solution valued at 32 dollars stolen Tuesday night from a local station. Entry was gained by breaking a small glass panel. No definite clues but possible local talent theory being checked by authorities.
