A Canadian high pressure system pushed record cold across Nebraska with Norfolk at 29 degrees Lincoln 3 below old 1888 mark Omaha 27 Beatrice 24 Grand Island 31 McCook tied for high at 67. The National Weather Service forecast warmer air tonight and a rise into the upper 70s to mid 80s by Thursday.

ASCS calls for committee nominations in county

ASCS opens nominations for Agr Stabilization and Conservation Service community committee on a mail ballot schedule from Nov 22 to Dec 2. Six ASC communities in the county include Trogiitz Dalton Weyerts Chambers Sidney and Adgepole. Petitions must name one nominee willing to serve, be signed by at least three eligible farm voters, and arrive at the ASCS office by March 29.

Sidney permits drop in September totals

City of Sidney reports September building permits at 24 107 down from 38 392 last year, while year to date total near 614 000 versus 468 000 a year earlier. Commercial remodeling led activity with Hageland Variety and Elwell Motors each at 7 000, others mainly residential improvements.

Golden Link plans parade and events for I 80 opening

The Interstate 80 Golden Link committee outlined a busy Oct 19 schedule with public events at the dedication site west of the west Sidney interchange. Activities include relay horse races a 15 mile bicycle race from Potter drag races hare scramble classes starting at 1 pm trophies at 3 30 pm and Sunday team roping calf roping and barrel racing at the Sidney Saddle Club. Other plans feature a 6 horse Clydesdale hitch parade by Jerry Lewis a Francis Warren Air Force Base contingent and a NASA film program with Astronaut Robert Overmeyer.

Auto crushing drive to begin in Cheyenne County

A Panhandle sponsored auto crushing project will start next week in Cheyenne County with coordinator Ken Sakurada. The junk auto removal drive began in Scottsbluff late last month and has moved through the Panhandle. M M Wrecking Co of Sioux Falls is supplying a mobile crusher to communities in the central region.

Lodgepole Infant Casey Bondegard Dies Of Suspected Suffocation

Funeral services are set for 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Lodgepole for 13 month old Casey Donald Bondegard who was found dead in his home Tuesday. Coroner Don Tedesco indicates suffocation as the apparent cause and an autopsy was ordered. Casey, born August 17, 1973 in Sidney, is survived by his parents Barton and Shirley Franss Bondegard, one sister Shelie JoAnne, grandparents Don Fraass and Lloyd Bondegard, and great grandparents R N Huff. The Rev George Wheat will officiate with Holeciek Funeral Home handling arrangements and burial at Pleasant View Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Lodgepole Rescue Viale.

Christ Buys County Lots in Clarkson Addition Sidney

Cheyenne County Commission at its regular meeting Tuesday authorized construction on seven and eight of Clarkson Addition to Sidney, selling lots to Carl Christ Jr. Christ proposed housing units. The panel also accepted Ackerman-Robinson Insurance Co. bid of 13300 for package liability coverage and gave notice to the Treasurer to sell the north half of block 15 Clarkson Addition Sidney.

Wheat crops face winter stress amid scarce county moisture

Cheyenne County farmers report topsoil moisture short and subsoil very dry as most wheat has been seeded. Statewide, about 80 percent of wheat fields are planted, with 8 percent below normal. Growers fear winter kill if dryness persists, though germination tops expectations in warm weather.
