Sidney Faces Energy Crisis and Power Plant Transition
Sidney officials grapple with rising fuel costs and dwindling oil and natural gas reserves. The city relies on oil and gas for about 80 percent of electricity, with plans to preserve generating capacity while considering coal and external power sources. The Bureau of Reclamation contract ends in 1976, prompting talk of buying power from Tri-State Wheatbelt or Basin Electric and conserving use to protect supply. Prices are rising as fuel oil climbs from 129 to 166 cents a gallon, and officials warn of possible rate increases after new structures are proposed in early 1974.
