Elbert Berry, age unspecified, became the third victim of a corn picker accident in the Big Springs area when his hand was drawn into the rollers while clearing a stalk on his farm south of town. He lost four fingers and was hospitalized for skin graft attempts.
Dr. W. V. Lambert Dean of the University of Nebraska College of Agriculture heads a six week scouting tour in the Soviet Union. Lambert has prior overseas roles with the USDA FAO and U N missions and will speak about his Russia experiences here on Tuesday. Clark Schaffert of Dalton wins a $300 4 H Club scholarship at the Chicago congress for national 4 H meat animal achievement.
Cheyenne County Sheriff Bill Schulz reports multiple farmer complaints about night rabbit hunting across the county. Tracks appear widely, especially north of Brownson near the Sioux Ordnance Depot fence, causing soil disruption and blown wheat. The sheriff warns trespassing and says prosecutions will begin.
Services were held in Colorado Springs for James W. Gregory 84 an oldtime Dalton and Gurley resident who died Wednesday in Colorado Springs He worked as section foreman for the C B Q railroad in Dalton Surviving are three sons Harry E and Robert L of Colorado Springs and Lester J of Oak Creek three daughters Mrs Minnie Wilhelmson of Loveland Mrs Mable Rauss and Mrs Violet Minshall of Sidney He was preceded in death by his wife Alice and daughter Goldie Strong of Denver.
The Telegraph reports the police and chief are puzzled by the log entry "6:32 p.m. Saturday-stolen from car near post office. One pair of crouches." No description of crouches exists and officers seek explanation as investigation proceeds.
Troy Smith, a Sidney painter, escaped serious harm after falling about nine feet from a scaffold inside the old Safeway store building on Illinois Street. He received treatment at a doctor’s office and was sent home.
Two six year old boys allegedly admitted playing with matches caused a 35 year old barn on Tom Allington farm near Sunol to burn. One horse was lost with the structure and hay and baled straw burned. Lodgepole Fire Department saved nearby structures. Barn only partially insured.
Funeral and burial services are set for Mrs. Frances Ackerman in Sidney after her death Sunday in Denver following a stroke. The 1:30 p.m. service will be at the First Christian Church with Rev. H Ralph Bixel. burial in Greenwood Cemetery. Pallbearers include Lee Gain and others. Surviving are eight children, 29 grandchildren, 46 great grandchildren and 10 great great grandchildren.
Veterans of Foreign Wars members from western Nebraska eastern Wyoming and western South Dakota gather in Scottsbluff for the Commander in Chief Ball and Banquet.
