A heavy storm and blizzard across western Nebraska delivered substantial snowfall and moisture. State Statistician A. E. Anderson reported widespread crop benefits, with melting snow boosting subsoil moisture while corn harvesting faced delays and sown grain largely spared damage.
Luis Gomez a 45 year old Mexican beet laborer at Clyde Truax’s farm three miles southwest of Ovid was found frozen to death on the road near his car Saturday morning after a blizzard. He had bought a car in Julesburg last week and disappeared while returning to fetch it. Gomez left work with pay in hand, wandered in the storm and died beside his stalled vehicle near the Truax place. Survived by wife and one child. Funeral held Sunday in Ovid.
More than forty men attended a free meal in the Methodist church basement as Rev. F. C. Mills spoke on the Junior Chamber’s value to the community. Vern Livingston gave a comic reading. other speakers included E. R. Woolley, Harold Ells, R. L. McKoskey, H. H. Huntsinger, and H. E. Armitage. The group showed strong support for city council funding efforts and discussed street surfacing and a potential new post office for Sidney.
Pioneer residents follow a Denver newspaper series on Tom Horn the notorious western figure. Horn's name rang across the frontier for lawlessness and killings he admitted began at age 26 before his death.
In a Boeing Omaha hangar on Monday night a vivid radio round table connected pilots and stations from Des Moines to Omaha and beyond. The exchange linked Aurora Iowa City Lincoln Cheyenne Rock Springs Salt Lake City Elko Reno Sacramento Oakland and Pacific routes, showing radios and planes coordinating as pilots Cochrane and Behncke spoke across the modern air network. The weekly grain market review notes modest gains for the week ending November 22 as domestic futures strengthen. Stronger demand from Canada and rust damage in Argentina supported grains while slow foreign wheat absorption in Europe offset gains. Corn rose with wheat as prices advanced after an early week decline.
Figures from the Great Western Sugar company show the North Platte valley harvests the second best sugar beet crop on record in the territory this year with yield figures awaited.
The mother of Thomas Crosbie died at her home in Evanston Wyoming Sunday at age 83 from infirmities of old age. Funeral services were held there Tuesday afternoon as Mr. Crosbie and his wife went to Evanston Saturday.
The Omaha Bee-News reports severe criticism of the state highway department after a western Nebraska blizzard left motorists marooned and workdays lost. Traveling men recount drifts over 1 000 feet long and five feet deep, with no state or county crews clearing roads from Alliance to Sidney, escalating calls to wake up Mr Cochran and equip gangs to clear highways faster.
Morris county residents protest after the death of 17 year old James Shuler of Broadwater. A coroner jury ruled he died from excessive liquor. Three men John Dolson Albert Hyland and A D Hill will be brought to trial tomorrow morning as part of a county wide law enforcement sweep in the river town.
The Sid ney Business and Professional Women club organized further at the regular Monday night gathering in the Union Pacific hotel dining room. A large crowd attended with many local school faculty members. Mrs Edna Rice led singing as members introduced themselves and grew acquainted. Future programs were discussed with worthwhile suggestions. A Christmas party was planned for December 8.
The American Legion will sponsor Gray Cooper in The Man From Wyoming at the Fox Theatre on December 4. This is a postponed Legion benefit show, and tickets sold for the proposed performance will be honored on December 4.
Mr Rosenbaum states losses of lambs at Rosenbaum farm south of Sidney totaled 116 during last week’s storm. At Crooklesb west of the show, drifts and misfortune caused further farm damage and deaths.
Reports that Miss Enid Marriott a Colorado school teacher was seen in a local hotel proved false Denver and Morgan county police say positive certainty she is not in the vicinity. Posses organized to scour the lonely Morgan county prairie with ranchers volunteering to aid the hunt after investigators found other clues unsubstantial.
The Cheyenne county Red Cross chapter launches its annual roll call drive in Sidney today and tomorrow with Mayor Merman Schroeder chairing the effort. He leads a crew soliciting funds to support the coming year's relief program and expresses confidence the quota will be met. The paper notes ongoing Red Cross relief work nationwide and Sidney’s strong response to this cause.
A good crowd attended the Knights of Columbus card party Tuesday night at the academy auditorium. Prizes were won by Charles Sokol, Mrs. Thomas O'Connell, Mrs. Leo Bartholomew, Frank Rauner and Edward Furer.
The senior chamber of commerce will meet next Monday at noon in the dining room of the senior center. Members are to discuss upcoming projects and community events.
General farmers of western Nebraska plan three half day meetings in Chadron December 10 11 and 12 with topics on crops dairy poultry feed and livestock. Dr F D Keim leads sessions on weeds livestock feeds and genetics while S C Swinbank Rex Coffee H W Biedermann and others discuss bean marketing harvesting machinery and poultry topics.
State Superintendent Charles Taylor reports rural one room schools are closing as better roads and tuition options draw families to city and village high schools. In 1930 Nebraska had 6,047 one room rural schools, down 208 since 1925, while public high school enrollment rose about 17 percent in five years and 106 percent in ten. Free high school tuition for rural residents reached 20,699, up 17 percent in five years and 162 percent in ten. The data show rural students increasingly seek high school education, with more attending in-district and other districts under growing compulsory attendance enforcement.
