March Of Dimes Holds Annual Meet
Longtime service to the March of Dimes was recognized at the annual meeting held at the Fort Sidney Motor Hotel. Sid ney attorney P. J. Heaton, Sr., received a National Foundation Distinguished Service plaque from Bill Hunter of Lincoln. Heaton has a 35 year association with the campaign and helped organize the Presidents Ball, the forerunner of the national March of Dimes. The group now focuses on birth defects research and vaccines as polio has been controlled, with 17,000 Nebraska babies born last year “less than perfect.” Cheyenne County workers and high school students attended, planning a January Mother’s March and high school drive, while downtown blue crutch sales will not be held this year.
