The Sidney Telegraph reports weekend Christmas openings with ads showing festive store decorations and holiday stock. Retailers say stocks are complete and larger than ever but expect dwindling choices in the next few days and urge early shopping.
A trace of moisture was recorded in the Sidney area as a north moving storm front passes. Southern and eastern zones report heavier moisture with light snow possible in eastern Wyoming and western Nebraska. roads may be slick if temperatures drop near freezing though daytime conditions appear above freezing. The Weather Bureau predicts above normal moisture through most of December with below normal temperatures, signaling a wet and cold trend for farming regions.
Preliminary drawings for an eight room addition to Memorial Hospital were approved by the board. Architect J Herward Duncan outlined the plans, with total project cost estimated between 90 000 and 100 900 including furnishings. Submittal to contractors is planned by February or March.
The Sidney Business and Professional Women's Club promotes Christmas Seals to fund TB and other respiratory disease work. Nebraska figures show 176 new TB cases last year and 250000 Americans may harbor active disease. Seals finance county TB groups to support research, education, X ray case finding, nursing, rehabilitation, and radio TV materials.
Sidney business men present a free choice beef door prize at the grand opening two day event. The pavilion, active weeks, draws crowds with top prices as Dave Truss manages the sale. A yearling colt will be a door prize with coffee and doughnuts Saturday. Sunday features a special horse sale near 100 head with registered and saddle horses listed.
Nebraska Experiment Station Quarterly reports a taste test by poultry food and nutrition scientists. They evaluated pheasants bled quickly versus kept in a sack and found the flavor difference too small to affect enjoyment.
President Robert Rauner of the Nebraska Wheat Growers Association will preside over a public relations general session at the National Association of Wheat Growers convention in Denver. The event runs December 12 to 14 with Vincent Fossier of Hartington and Agriculture Secretary Orville Freeman as speakers on December 13.
Western Nebraska fans plan to travel to Oklahoma University to watch Nebraska clash with Oklahoma in a decisive Big Eight showdown. Many expect a win could secure an Orange Bowl invitation and at least a share of the conference title. Fans chartered a plane, another Conair flight, and others drive to Norman, weather permitting.
An Interim Study Committee of State Senators proposed revising how Nebraska state school funds from land leases are distributed from youths aged 5 to 21 to a population aged 5 to 18. The panel also urged refinements in lease procedures, including longer term flexibility, bidding safeguards, and compensation for lessees upon surrender of leases.
Nebraska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission adjourned its monthly meeting after ruling on eight cases. Approvals included unorthodox drilling in Dundy and Kimball counties and a unitization plan in Kimball Cheyenne and Banner. dismissals were entered for Bale in Red Willow and British American Oil in Hayes County.
Thanksgiving will be a plain day in Cheyenne County jail with seven men and one woman sharing a hot plate kitchen. Meals will be hamburger steak ham n beans or wieners and sauerkraut as cooking facilities are restricted to inmates. City jail has no cooking facilities so meals are delivered to prisoners. If jailed on Thanksgiving a burger meal is likely.
Great Falls Mont wrestler Martini Mino known as The Terrible Turk visited Telegraph staff to clear his name after a weekend jail matter. He explained he is active in wrestling and personally makes jewelry to give away at bouts. He hopes to return to Sidney soon for more favorable crowds.
Kingwood Oil Co reports production casing run at its No 1 Deuser wildcat in west Gurley area CSW NW Sec 18 16 50. If pumping tests are successful and complaints are satisfied, the find could trigger more drilling nearby. The No 1 Deaser lies about 3.5 miles from the nearest Reimers Field production.
The Rev Carl L. Nelson of Light Memorial Presbyterian Church will succeed the Rev Henry Monnich of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church as president of the Sidney Ministerial Association. The transition was approved at Tuesday night’s section meeting.
Sidney boards push a 312000 bond to add classrooms at the senior high in anticipation of growing enrollments through 1966 even without population gains. An 80-student rise is expected in 1963-64, with the plan backed by volunteers ahead of a December 4 vote.
A noon luncheon in the Yendis Cafe attracted about 100 attendees for Cheyenne County Government Day. Students, teachers, and Legion members from local schools learned about county operations, heard L. M. Clinton urge civic alertness, and toured elected offices with faculty reps guiding them.
