Western Nebraska dodged heavy snow after a record six below zero. The cold spell caused widespread suffering among destitute families while moisture failed to materialize. Light flurries and a thin snow cover left table lands cold and dry. Stockmen prepared to guard cattle against another zero degree night as relief efforts began to unfold.
A five day pheasant season opens in Morrill, Garden and Scotts Bluff counties on Sunday, November 17, with fourteen counties total in the second season. Duck and goose shooting ends next Tuesday at four o'clock after a very successful season, with plentiful ducks and geese and many limits in Cheyenne county.
Lloyd W. Kelly of Grand Island national committeeman for Nebraska young democrats will speak at Cheyenne County Young Democrats in Sidney Monday evening. Kelly, a longtime Nebraska Democratic leader, is Hall County county attorney and former Grand Island police judge. The meeting will be in the district courthouse room and is open to all Democrats.
Sidney marked Armistice Day with legal liquor but found it a sourer holiday than during prohibition. Peace authorities reported little open drinking and fewer troubles than in years. Liquor store dealers also saw little evidence of excessive consumption, underscoring the lure of illegal alcohol.
Melvin Peterson and W A Cronk take over management of the Texaco service station at 10th avenue and Hickory street, succeeding R E Welch. The new managers advertise special services and urge a fair trial of their products by the motoring public.
Sidney announces a new class for instrumental beginners with first lesson on December 7. The program expands bands and orchestras in the Sidney schools as demand grows. Pupils from all schools may enroll after passing an examination. consultation from J W Cochran notes.
Mark Werner, director, says the panhandle WPA project applications are near completion with enough on file to employ the district's unemployed. Late submissions were covered by a two million dollar blanket request. No official deadline has been set and substitutions of new projects for less desirable ones may occur. Office staff continue sorting large stacks of forms.
Lodge Pole schools opened last Monday after a three week closure due to scarlet fever. The building was fumigated and officials say the danger of spread from this source is negligible. Officials believe the epidemic is under control and expect no further restrictions unless new cases arise.
Cheyenne County is designated for tuberculosis inspection and testing of cattle. Director Ww W. Banning of the department of agriculture and inspection announced the action and noted examinations will likely begin November 25.
The Potter village board awarded a contract to Fairbanks Morse for a diesel engine to be installed as an additional power unit in the municipal light and power plant. The project is funded jointly by the village and a government source and was long needed, the board said.
The Sidney instrument program marks its first anniversary with a public concert Monday night at 7 30 at the city auditorium. Under J W Cochran the uniformed juvenile band will perform alongside glee clubs, orchestras, and the Sidney band while the Music Parents association holds its November meeting. Admission is free and new classes for beginners begin next month.
Next Sunday is homecoming day at the Methodist church with Dr. L. H. Kaub of Lexington, former Sidney pastor, as guest speaker. He will deliver the sermon at 10 a.m. A basket dinner will follow at noon.
County treasurer Louis Wasem says 1935 motor vehicle taxes are now being accepted. Eight remittances had arrived by Wednesday afternoon as taxes must be paid before 1936 licenses can be issued. Those who fail to pay face license denial and possible arrest. bring receipts when applying for 1935 plates.
Washington reports indicate the AAA corn hog program may reverse course to pay a bounty for pigs raised. A conference of 35 agricultural experts with Secretary Wallace discussed restoring production to a 100 percent base using the 1932-33 average, allowing up to a 10 percent increase. Farmers would receive $1.50 per head for pigs raised up to base, while non-raised pigs drew a lower benefit, with penalties possible for exceeding limits.
Herbert Hansel, 14, of Minneapolis, lost both legs under a freight train. He lies in a local hospital amid gifts and prayers from Sidney residents who praise his brave spirit and hope to save his legs below the knees for possible artificial limbs.
A. E. Anderson reports Nebraska's 1935 corn crop at 120,568,000 bushels with an average yield of 14 bushels per acre. Compared to 1934 the crop is down sharply though the potato harvest is better. Poor quality due to high moisture and earlier freezing affected much of the corn, much late planted after June 1.
B F Perry, Nebraska old age pension commissioner, estimated the eligible for old age assistance would shrink from 5 000 to 10 000 or more under Governor Cochran's revised program. The exact share of Cheyenne county’s 185 applications ruled out is unknown though a proportional cut is expected. Perry had projected 25 000 to 30 000 eligible in total. fewer than 20 000 will meet new bills. Continued on Page 6.
Wheat contracts payments may be due any time and have been sent to Washington after local and state checks. Papers cover actual measurement of contracted fields to assure compliance with agreements. If flawless, checks will be issued immediately and delivered here. the fall payment is the largest of the year and will boost local business.
The 1935 turkey crop hatched later, delaying maturity and likely shrinking Thanksgiving shipments. Manager H V Anderson of the NPV market association said total loads may not exceed three carloads about 5400 birds, with light midweek loading at Wheatland Sidney Kimball Torrington Lusk Gering and Bridgeport.
Miss Avid Lobdell recently named special representative to the vice president of Union Pacific visited Sidney this week. She is the first woman in the United States in such a post. Her duties include riding trains and inspecting dining cars hotels and other properties to study matters of interest to women and children.
Sidney Masons led a ceremony dedicating Lodge Pole's new school building cornerstone. William CC Ramsey of Omaha served as grand master with Bishop George Allen Beecher and Judge E F Carter among dignitaries. Local Masons included N A S McLean A K Greenlee W J Shoemaker Leslie Neubauer J C Parks Herman Schroeder and Rev Peter J Spehr. Western Nebraska resists endorsement by the Nebraska farm bureau of C. B. Steward of Lincoln for Omaha federal land bank board. Lincoln already has one director. western representation is urged. F. S. McCaffree of Scottsbluff seeks reelection, while eastern Nebraska is accused of attempting to tilt the board.
The 1936-39 wheat contract applications terminate today with Cheyenne County showing unusually high signups. Officials note no plans for widespread farmer withdrawal from the program in the coming years despite earlier predictions.
Larry and Gertrude Filbin depart yesterday for Denver to compete in the Rainbow ballroom dance contest. They won the Sidney event Monday and earn the trip with all expenses paid as courtesy from the American Legion, accompanied by their mother.
About 400 people attended the Methodist church Sunday evening for a temperance program titled Guilty Fingerprints. The drama was directed by Rev. Herbert Ford of Lincoln, representing the anti saloon league of Nebraska, and the event was sponsored by WCTU societies of Sidney and Potter.
Red Cross prepared first aid manuals have arrived in Cheyenne county and are available at Roche hospital. The books are provided for volunteers planning to work at five relief stations along the Lincoln Highway within the county.
State Engineer Tilley notes about a dozen resignations as workers seek jobs on the tri county project. In Lincoln last week a Young Democrats banquet drew about 300. Henry Wolfe wins Lancaster County Democratic Club presidency. Charles Bryan has not filed for the First District nomination but will. Dwight Griswold likely to pursue a third bid for governor. Mr. Mullens’ $175,000 legal fee claim for Nebraska projects remains under review.
The Resettlement Administration released the first funds for a land utilization development program in northwestern Nebraska. A 35000 dollar allotment supports a 414000 dollar plan to develop about 155000 acres of sub marginal land in Dawes and Sioux counties. Representative Coffee learned of the authorization in a conference with Resettlement officials and the administration announced the money ready for use.
Russell Linch of Sidney, Wesleyan University student, Lincoln campus, plays John Miller in the Plainsman Players second production Confident Morning. The Wesleyan senior adapts the play as a conservative young farmer facing modern trials. Linch’s role is described as difficult but handled with unusual polish.
J. T. Shields, the new farm debt adjustment specialist for Nebraska, explains the state debt conciliation program aims to settle, without court action, cases where indebtedness far exceeds the debtor's ability to pay and foreclosure action is involved, with details continued on page three.
