Sugar War in Prospect Signals Beet Sugar Price Cut
A statement dated October 22 from Great Western Sugar announces a 50 cent per hundredweight price cut. The cut will be absorbed as an expense and not passed to growers, applied via a 50 cent per bag allowance to customers in key territories. Invoices will use regular list prices with payments due mid and month end. Denver financial commentary notes this as the largest price reduction in the industry, sparking speculation of a broader sugar war and potential new beet sugar ventures linked to Chicago bankers and Holly Sugar interests.
