Funds OKd as new classes open Monday at Sioux Army Depot

Funds have been approved for a one year extension of the Federal manpower retraining program at Sioux Army Depot. Sidney schools superintendent Russell Pedersen announced Congress and the Nebraska Department of Labor have arranged for five project categories adding seven staff and a student body of 200 for auto body and mechanics clerical and building maintenance training. Current retraining students will graduate Friday with most securing employment. The food services course continues under a separate proposal with no interruption. Rep. Dave Martin says details on total funds will come soon.

Land Use Plan Seeks Ways to Profit From Sioux Depot Acres

A land use survey for Sioux Army Depot near Cheyenne County drafts an industrial park plan and other options for 16 700 acres and 51 structures as the depot phases out in 1967. Proposed uses include Industrial Park grazing lands cultivated lands civil defense facilities and a research project potential waste disposal. The plan aims to attract private and public participation while transferring title to Sidney.

Nebraska AG OKs state trade school plan at Sioux Army Depot

The Nebraska Attorney General ruled the Department of Education can start a state supported trade school at Sioux Army Depot subject to conditions. Approval hinges on a federal state agreement granting permission to acquire buildings land and equipment under a letter of intent with eventual title conveyance. State education officials had not commented by press time.

Farmers Union County Meeting To Be Friday

The Cheyenne County Farmers Union annual meeting is set for Friday November 12 at 11 am in the Fort Sidney Motor Hotel. A noon luncheon will be served. Business includes resolutions on county state and national levels and election of officers. A Kansas City Farmers Union Cooperative Marketing Assn. representative will speak, with Elton Berck state president scheduled to attend.

Morris Testifies At Pope Trial

Deputy Sheriff Gene Morris testified about 22 minutes in the Duane Pope murder trial at Lincoln. He helped at the Big Springs scene last June, where bullets were dug from The Farmers State Bank floor. Earlier he was called to Lincoln the prior week as part of a growing witness list in the McPherson College graduate case.

Fringe Zoning Ordinance And Map Published

A map and a proposed ordinance setting up fringe area zoning regulations for Sidney are published to meet legal requirements. The ordinance would affect about one mile in all directions from the city limits, giving the city power to control development within the area under Nebraska law. The council has pressed the move after months of discussion and planning commission approval.

Gurley Farmer George Frerichs Frerits Dies at 43

George William Frerits, 43, died suddenly at his home six miles east of Gurley Tuesday evening. He leaves wife Lola and daughter Georgia, 11. Services pending at Craig Mortuary in Sidney.
