Moisture favorable to wheat in Nebraska fields
Nebraska soil moisture in the top four feet is above average for the season but below last year’s record. The State Federal Division of Agricultural Statistics reports an average available water of 4.54 inches, with most districts above the 10-year average except Southeast. Wheat is well rooted and off to a good start, though more rain is desired before ground freezes. The 1967 crop shows limited growth with an average height of 4.5 inches, generally good stands, and is mostly free of insects and disease, though high winds caused some mottling. A rain renewal is needed to replenish surface moisture after dry, warm, windy October.
