Family farms on the way out or still thriving
Under Secretary of Agriculture True D. Morse told a Southeastern Community Development Association meeting in Athens Georgia that about 95 percent of farms remain family operated, a share as high as 20 to 30 years ago. He noted modern equipment keeps farms family driven, with fewer sharecroppers and less hired labor, and he predicted continued family operation with country living tied to adequate income opportunities.

Halogeton Threat to Native Grasses Remains
USDA and Nevada Agricultural Experiment Station studies show halogeton, a poisonous weed, deposits salt on soil that suppresses germination of native range grasses. Experiments with crested wheatgrass and Russian wildrye show some tolerance, but no grass grew where halogeton existed for years. Mulch trials reduced perennial grass emergence, with higher mulch rates causing larger declines.
